2 The students will describe the role of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe by summarizing the steps Khrushchev took to de-Stalinize the U.S.S.R Announcement: There were be a bi-weekly World History Review Session in Mr. Gregg’s Room. The Chapter 19 test will be Friday, April 8 Warm-up: Examine the chart on page 675 and answer the following: 1. What is the main difference between a command economy and a market economy? 2. How does the poster and its title illustrate a command economy?

3 Postwar Soviet Leaders Stalin increased Russia’s industrial production by 40% Focused on heavy industry manufacture of machines and equipment for factories and mines Reign of Stalin Literary and scientific work had to conform to the state’s political needs Stalin died on March 5, 1953

4 Khrushchev Era De-Stalinize the country Loosened government controls on literary and artistic works Produce more consumer goods Grow more corn/cultivate more lands this did not work Cuban Missile Crisis final straw Khrushchev pushed out in 1964

5 Soviets took control of: East Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, and Hungary between 1945 and 1947 Czechoslovakia in 1948 Yugoslavia and Albania exceptions both Communist, but did not give in to Stalin Revolts against Communism Poland-1956. They stayed loyal to the Warsaw Pact Hungary-November 1956 declared independence from Russia and Russia invaded to keep them a satellite Czechoslovakia-began to relax some rules until Russia invaded in 1968 and did away with the reforms
