2 Definition of Influenza Influenza is a highly contagious viral disease. It is caused by various types of influenza virus strains. - is usually more common in periods from January to March and from July to August locally -Three types of influenza viruses are recognised, namely A, B and C -Type A is more common and is further classified into different subtypes(e.g. H1N1 and H3N2)

3 General Symptoms of Influenza 1. start 1-2 days after infection(quite suddenly) 2. Body aches 3. Extreme coldness 4. Fever(ranging from 38 to 39 ℃ ) 5. Fatigue 6. Headache 7. Irritated watering eyes 8. Runny nose 9. Cough

4 2--Occasionally a person may become infected by touching objects carrying the virus on the surface and then transferring it to their mouth or nose Route of Transmission 1--From person to person by respiratory droplets generated by coughing and sneezing or by direct contact with the secretions of infected persons. 3--Through droplets in crowded or poorly ventilated areas

5 3--If symptoms persist, one should consult a doctor General Treatment 1--Infected persons should take adequate rest and drink plenty of water 2--Supportive treatment can relieve symptoms Antiviral agents(neuraminidase inhibitors and M2 protein inhibitors) can reduce the severity and duration of illness but must be used under doctor's prescription and given in the early stage of illness

6 1--Vaccination: There is effective influenza vaccine to prevent influenza and its complications. The vaccine should be repeated every year to maintain the protection Preventive Measures 2--Keep Good personal health,such as washing hands with liquid soap and wear mask when symptoms of respiratory tract infection or fever develop 3--Observing environmental hygiene(e.g. maintaining good ventilation)
