2 Jainism Jainism is another religion the started in ancient India c. 500 BC Today, there are 6 million followers Most live in India

3 Mahavira Jainism was developed by a religious leader named Mahavira
Same time period as Siddartha Guatama Like Siddartha, he was from a wealthy royal family and gave up his wealth and property. He owned nothing and begged for his food.

4 Mahavira Became known as Jina “the conqueror”
Followers became known as Jains

5 What did he teach? Many teachings were like Buddha’s
Both taught people to stop wanting worldly things. Both taught could escape the cycle of rebirth and reach nirvana Practiced strict poverty

6 What did he teach? AHIMSA Ahimsa is the key (most important) value
Ahimsa = nonviolence toward all living things All life is sacred; try to avoid harming any living creature For example: they used brooms to sweep away insects so that they would not step on them. They did not farm because they were afraid of plowing under worms and other living things in the soil Guess: What would they do to a pesky mosquito?

7 Today Mohandas Gandhi Indian Leader in the 1900’s.
Wanted to free India from Great Britain. Held a nonviolent struggle against Brittish rule Thousands would come to hear Gandhi speak or to simply sit with him while he prayed. Many refused to pay taxes or buy British goods as a show of protest. Many were jailed, but India eventually gained independence of Great Britain. Gandhi was jailed many times. His methods of nonviolence influenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
