1. Bellwork: Day 1 The Mormon religion, in the past, has allowed for the practice of polygamy within their church doctrine. Mr. Jim Smith, a practicing Mormon, believes in this policy and therefore concludes that it is his right to have two wives. The federal government prohibits the practice of polygamy and bring charges up against Mr. Smith. Were Mr. Smith’s constitutional rights violated? Explain why there was or was not a violation of Mr. Smith’s constitutional rights in this case. Take out Assn #2 for stamp.

2. Bellwork: Day 1 JUDEGEMENT: Mr. Smith’s rights were not violated. The Constitution does not give a person the right to violate the law, offend public moral, or otherwise threaten the health, safety, or welfare of the community. The court upheld a similar decision in Reynolds v. United States, 1879. Take out Assn #2 for stamp.

4. Civil Liberties vs. Civil Rights CIVIL LIBERTIES- protection of freedoms from the government. CIVIL RIGHTS- government actions trying to make constitutional protections a reality for all people.

5. Constitution Bill of Rights- first 10 freedoms provided to us. The Bill of Rights was originally created to limit the power of the Federal government.

7. 1st Amendment The “free exercise clause” of the First Amendment refers to religious liberties.

8. 5 th Amendment You can’t be called to testify against yourself.

9. Double Jeopardy The Constitution forbids double jeopardy, or being tried twice for the same crime.

10. Federal vs. State's Rights National Constitution Alien- foreigner, non- resident -Most Constitutional rights are given to these people as well -Exception, right to travel freely -Also denied to those in jail, on bail, in mental institutions

11. Federal vs. State's Rights State Constitution -Every state has their own Constitution that is presented to Congress and the President when they become a state
