2 What is ALP? The Accelerated Learning Programme The main focus of the programme is to ensure that children meet age- related expectations. Excellent tool to identify skills/gaps that pupils need and then target the specific need with intensive support. Provides teachers with a basis for moving pupils on quickly

3 The class teacher will have a 1:1 meeting with the Headteacher to identify pupils that should be chosen for accelerated learning based on set criteria: Not making expected progress (through the year and the Key Stage) Not working at age related expectations Groups are made up of up to 6 pupils, Parents would then receive a letter indicating the targets your child has and how you might support. The programme has been in place in Kemsley since June 2014 with all targets being set in writing How does the programme work?

4 Notifying the parents (Crucial to have parental support) Dear Parents I am delighted to be able to tell you that (pupil name) has been chosen to take part in out accelerated learning programme. The programme initially lasts two weeks, but may be extended for a further two weeks. At school we are focussing on helping your child develop these skills: 1. 2. 3. Thank you for helping us to help your child. In order for the programme to work, it is crucial to have parental support and input.

5 Improving your child’s progress Specific gaps in a child’s learning are identified by the HT, ASL, DH and class teacher. Targets are set Whenever the class teacher or TA works with the pupils they will receive intensive targeted support to achieve their targets. Groups within the literacy lesson Incorporating the targets into all subject areas –Science, topic…… Now rapid progress can begin

6 (Bi-weekly meeting) Every two weeks the CT has a meeting with HT/DH to discuss the pupils on the ALP. The CT must provide evidence to show that children have moved up a sub-level. The outcome for each child at the end of the meeting will be as follows: After 2 weeks of intensive support children will have the required skills and move off of the programme. ( Parents will receive a letter indicating this) May require further support, given another 2 weeks on ALP ( This will also be indicated in a letter to parents) New pupils will then be added if spaces are available. Important to note that your child may need to attend future ALP sessions if other gaps are identified during the year. 7 How can I help my child? Make sure your child always arrives on time Familiarise yourself with your child’s targets Support your child by reiterating the targets as and when possible eg through homework, when reading, when writing in any format. Ask the class teacher if you are ever unsure about a target that your child has been asked to focus on. Look out for the letter at the end of the programme that informs you of the progress made. 8 Next steps To date, at Kemsley, the focus has been on writing Success of the programme is very clear Move towards putting the programme in place for maths and reading Same principles will apply Maths can be ‘different’ to what is going on in class. Specific ‘assertive mentoring’ input will continue in these areas, progress will be reviewed at bi-weekly meetings
