1 ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES Notes for 1 st Period Writing Persuasion Unit

2 The suggestion that using this product puts the user ahead of the times (e.g. a toy manufacturer encourages kids to be the first on their block to have a new toy).

3 FACTS AND FIGURES Statistics and objective factual information is used to prove the superiority of the product (e.g. a car manufacturer quotes the amount of time it takes their car to get from 0 to 100 m.p.h.)

4 WEASEL WORDS “Weasel words" are used to suggest a positive meaning without actually really making any guarantee (e.g. a scientist says that a diet product might help you to lose weight the way it helped him to lose weight.).

5 MAGIC INGREDIENTS The suggestion that some almost miraculous discovery makes the product exceptionally effective (e.g. a pharmaceutical manufacturer describes a special coating that makes their pain reliever less irritating to the stomach than a competitor’s product).

6 PATRIOTISM The suggestion that purchasing this product shows your love of your country (e.g. a company brags about its product being made in America and employing American workers).

7 Diversion & Transfer Diversion seems to tackle a problem or issue, but then throws in a distraction. Transfer uses words and ideas with positive connotations are used to suggest that the positive qualities should be associated with the product and the user. Ex: Beer/Alcohol & Cigarette ads implying good times with their product.

8 Plain Folks & Snob Appeal Plain Folks technique is the suggestion that the product is a practical product of good value for ordinary people. The suggestion that the use of the product makes the customer part of an elite group with a luxurious and glamorous life style.

9 Bribery & Testimonial Bribery seems to give a desirable extra something. A famous personality is used to endorse the product.

10 Wit and Humor Customers are attracted to products that divert the audience by giving viewers a reason to laugh or to be entertained by clever use of visuals or language.

11 SIMPLE SOLUTIONS Avoid complexities, and attack many problems to one solutions (e.g. Buy this makeup and you will be attractive, popular, and happy).

12 CARD STACKING Basically, Card-Stacking means stacking the cards in favor of the product; advertisers stress is positive qualities and ignore negative. One of the most used techniques in advertising!

13 This technique uses appealing words and images to sell the product. The indirect attempt is to get you to believe this product is a “life-changer”.

14 BANDWAGON Exploits the desire of most people to join the crowd or be on the winning side, and avoid winding up the losing side. Advertisers try to be careful to be sensitive to individuality, but know that people “will go with the crowd”.

15 ADVERTISING PROJECT (due 3/15) With your partner – come up with a way to explain this advertising technique in your own words. AND think of a product, place, etc where you have seen it used – OR come up with your own advertisement for your own unique product and use the technique in your ad. Be prepared to share with the class. Be prepared to take notes on each group’s presentation. Rubric is on Mr. W’s webpage.
