Zhang, Jun Zhang Advisors: Prof. Talavage, Prof. Nauman, E. Breedlove, A. Phillips School : Electrical and Computer Engineering Behind the Ear (BTE) Device Throughout the game, the cranial acceleration of a given player is monitored using accelerometers placed on a cap. Sampling occurs throughout the game at 2.2kHz until a sizeable impact occurs (determined by the threshold range). When such an impact occurs, the readings prior to and post impact are stored to a microSD card. After these events are stored sampling continues as before and the cycle repeats. Serial Communication Pre-filtering to avoid aliasing Analog data Impact Detected This is a diagram of the power supply circuit. The battery charges while the device is plugged in/ syncing data with the computer. The battery and the DS2745 battery monitor is in parallel with the Max 1874 chip. The DS2745 and the Max 1874 will connect with the micro controller. Create a helmet that will detect both linear and rotational accelerations encountered by athletes during play Find an effective method to collect and store analog data Develop a filtering method to accurately detect a player received “impact” Convert and condense the collected raw data into a manageable sample set Provide accurate and understandable data to the Purdue neurotrauma group (PNG) to be used in studies aimed at quantifying the relationship between impact received and the extent of the induced brain damage Zigbee is a wireless protocol that does not require a continuous connection between the modules. Instead, it utilizes a pinging protocol that broadcasts its packet every interval so surrounding modules can receive it. Zigbee module (MeshNetics Zigbit MNZB-24-A2) inserted into every helmet A similar device to the helmet is being developed that will include less sensors and no wireless transmission, but will be more affordable and in a smaller package. It will rest on the neck, behind the head, and use the neck or ears to stay attached. It will also have other features, such as a capacitive sensor to know when the device is on the neck. Battery: 063450 Max 1847 Battery Monitor: DS2745 Device is connected to computer Microcontroller Data from RF Data format conversion Use linear regression to solve the overconstrained problem Calculate the magnitude of the acceleration of the center of the mass Set a threshold to identify the impulse(event) Dump the 'events' and player's information into the database Collect players' personal information Returned Data In case one module is too far from host, a network of Zigbee modules can relay data through surrounding modules back to the host. CONCEPTUAL DESIGN Device Features: 2kHz sampling rate Impact notification microSD storage Low power Flexible shell Comfortable and lightweight Possible RF transmit This device has the advantage of being used in sports that do not typically use helmets, such as soccer, basketball and rugby.
