Labvolt Systems MicroGrid, National Technical University of Athens, Power Lab, B.V.M. Engineering College, Gujarat, India BACKGROUND TOPICS

The main goal of our project is to design and implement a power transmission and distribution protection model to be used as an experiment module for studying the operation of typical protection systems in a university laboratory setting. PROBLEM STATEMENT

1.To transmit and distribute power at low voltage using a single phase system. 2.To simulate faults on the system via micro controllers. 3.To correct faults on the system via micro controllers. 4.To demonstrate the effectiveness of a micro controlled autonomous system in the event of system disruptions FUNCTIONS

There exists an argument suggesting that the use of computer aided learning tools may detract from the educational quality that can be obtained using the traditional professor to student personal interaction method of learning. The concept is based on the tendency of students to not absorb or understand the learning material due to the repetitive nature of a computer aided tools. For example, an individual may correctly carry out an experiment by following a set of instruction but he or she may not fully understand the theories or concepts on completion of the experiment. To address this issue we have decided that additional features will have to be added to our project to avoid the negative effects of using computer aided tools. 1.Increase student involvement by adding measurement points 2.Provide feedback via LCD ETHICAL & SOCIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Patent 6608742 Deals specifically with a voltage and current source selection system for use in the protection, automation and control of an electric power system. This patented idea is a system that contains voltage and current sources and selection capabilities for use in line protection and line fault protection. Since the scope of our work will be limited to simulating faults we do not feel that there will be an encroachment on our part related to the use of this specific invention. Patent 6629044 Is an electrical distribution analysis method and associated apparatus designed to be used for analyzing selective electrical distribution systems. This system is software based consisting of complex algorithms as opposed to our project idea that will consist of both hardware and software components. Again, we can appreciate the similarity with regards to the process of distribution line simulations but we also feel that due to the simplicity of project, that we will not have any conflicts associated with this patent. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

NEC Article 250.4. This details the general requirements for grounding and bonding. It begins by distinguishing between, and giving requirements for, five categories of grounding: Electrical system grounding, Grounding of electrical equipment, Bonding of electrical equipment, Bonding of electrically conductive materials and other equipment, and Effective ground-fault current path. NEC Section 384-16 requires lighting and appliance branch-circuit panelboards to be protected on the supply side by not more than two main overcurrent devices. NEC 110.23. Current Transformers. "Unused current transformers associated with potentially energized circuits shall be short-circuited." Leaving the leads to dangle is an invitation for disaster.” NEC Article 300.3 addresses conductors and enclosures. (B) requires all conductors of the same circuit to be in the same wire way. One reason for this is the basic physics involved when the electromagnetic fields of conductors interact. STANDARDS
