EET 110 - Survey of Electronics Chapter 7 - Simple Series, and Parallel circuits.

Objectives Upon completion the student will be able to: –Identify the basic components of a circuit –Identify common electrical symbols used in schematic diagrams –Compare electrical pictorial, schematic, wiring and block diagrams –compare the operation of series and parallel connected load devices

Objectives –Draw the schematic diagram of a circuit when given a set of written instructions –Read a simple schematic electrical diagram. –Complete a wring number -sequence chart and wiring diagram from a given schematic diagram. –Satisfactorily wire circuits with the aid of a wiring diagram.

Circuit Components The three fundamental electrical quantities –Voltage or electrical potential –Current or flow of electrons –resistance - the tendency to resist the flow of electrons.

Circuit Components The component parts that make up any circuit are –the Energy Source supplies the voltage required to move the free electrons along the conductor two types of sources AD and DC –protective device protects the circuit wiring and equipment interrupts flow when current is excessive fuse, circuit breaker or electronic control

Circuit Components –Conductors low resistance path for the flow of the free electrons usually wire - copper, etc. –A control device controls the flow of electrons a switch, rheostat or other controller –The LOAD produces the desired function or work lamps, motors, heaters, speakers …

Circuit Symbols Used to describe electronic circuits Universal Standard –ANSI –DIN (Europe) Diagrams require special symbols and conventions

Circuit Diagrams pictorial –shows physical details of circuit

Circuit Diagrams schematic –shows electrical details of circuit –uses symbols to REPRESENT components

Circuit Diagrams wiring –shows the connection of various devices

Circuit Diagrams block –shows overall function of circuit

Circuit Diagrams We can use these diagrams to display and communicate information about electronics circuits. Serve as documentation for ourselves or others allow us to understand an existing circuit –troubleshooting There are several basic types of electronic connection.

Series Circuit the components are connected sequentially if one is removed, the current flow to all components stops

Series Circuit current flow through each is the same Voltage POTENTIAL is distributed across each component in the series. The algebraic sum of the voltages across each individual component is the same as the total voltage applied.

Parallel Circuit components are connected to share the two voltage source leads. The electrical potential across each element in set is the same Current varies, dependent on resistance of the individual components

Parallel Circuit

Wiring from a schematic In order to translate the ELECTRONIC layout to a physical one, we can use some basic steps to assist in the process Future labs will require translating a schematic diagram into its physical realization. Using the schematic and the circuit, we can identify test points.

Wiring from a schematic Draw a schematic diagram based on the set of instructions given

Assign a number to each terminal of each component part. Group all common terminal numbers together

Number the terminals of each component on the wiring board based on the schematic.

Connect all common sets of terminal.

Breadboarding Circuits A variety of ‘Breadboarding systems exist. The idea is to build a circuit without the need to solder connections –temporary circuits ‘Experimenter’ kits allow quick assembly and test, without detailed or length construction.

Simulating using computer software Pspice Electronics Work Bench

Assignment Read Chapters
