1 IAP2 CANADA CORE VALUES AWARDS 2015 HOW TO WRITE AN AWARD WINNING ENTRY

3 AWARD CATEGORIES 2015 IAP2 Canada is offering 3 National Awards: Canadian Project of the Year Award Canadian Organization of the Year Award Canadian Research Project of the Year Award Which will move on to compete internationally at the IAP2 Federation Core Values Awards.

4 PROJECT AWARDS 2015 In 2015, IAP2 Canada is offering 4 Project Category Awards: (from which the winner of Project of the Year will be chosen) Creativity, Contribution and Innovation in the Field Indigenous Engagement Respect for Diversity, Inclusion and Culture P2 for the Greater Good.

5 PROJECT AWARD CATEGORIES Extending the Practice: Creativity Contribution and Innovation in the Field Innovative, creative use of techniques and tools Contribution to the practice of P2 Indigenous Engagement Award: Engagement processes designed and implemented by Indigenous practitioners Culturally appropriate and inclusive processes with Indigenous people/communities

6 PROJECT AWARD CATEGORIES Respect for Diversity, Inclusion and Culture Award Effective engagement with marginalized, vulnerable and “hard to reach” populations; Multicultural, linguistically diverse and/or bilingual process that reflect a depth and diversity of participants; Size and scope of project that reflects Canada P2 for the Greater Good Effective ways for the public to participate, with limited resourcing and in the name of positive social change; Processes implemented by non-profits, NGO’s or delivered pro-bono Projects that result in positive social outcomes with limited budget/resources

7 FORMAT CONSIDERATIONS Review the Style Guide carefully Please pay attention to format requirements  Unlikely an entry would be disqualified for format  HOWEVER in a tie between two entries, format may be the deciding factor

8 FORMAT OVERVIEW 8 – 10 pages (8 ½ x 11 in) depending on whether photos/graphics are included. Arial 11 point font  Cover page: title; category; organization; nominee; contact Information; 2 participant references; contacts for 3 publications (newspapers, journals, magazines, etc.) to be notified if your submission is selected  Page 2: case study summary table  Pages 3-8: the award submission  Page 8-10 (optional): permitted if images or photos are included

10 CASE STUDY SUMMARY TABLE  Template is provided in the style guide:  Refer to past State of the Practice reports on the IAP2 Federation website, take a look at the 2014 IAP2 Canadian and American winners.

11 HEADINGS – ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR Background: P2 Challenges and Opportunities Rational for P2 Impact of P2 on Decisions Impact:  Evidence of P2 influence on organizational culture Evaluation:  Evidence to demonstrate how the Core Values influence the organization and its public participation approach and practice Independent References  Evidence of stakeholder acknowledgement of P2 practices

12 HEADINGS – RESEARCH AWARD The Problem and the Challenge  Overall research question or problem – alignment with P2 Methodology and Theoretical Frameworks Describe your research methods and your approach Research Results Your findings and outcomes Contribution to the Body of Knowledge What is the contribution and how is it being shared? Alignment with Core Values  How are these reflected in your methodology and/or your findings? Independent References

13 HEADINGS – PROJECT AWARDS The Problem and Challenge How does P2 respond to the challenge or the opportunity – why do it? The Role of P2 Level of engagement and project objectives What is the decision statement? The role of the public and stakeholders? Alignment with Core Values How did your project align with the core values – consider each of them. Don’t forget to include the decision making process. Creating Relationships and Building Trust Evaluation Process When and what did you evaluate? What were the results of those evaluations? Uniqueness of the Project Independent References

14 CATEGORY REQUIREMENTS  Use the section headings from the style guide for the category.  Devote significant attention to addressing the 7 Core Values  Organization: Emphasize impact of Core Values on organizational culture  The Research Award acknowledges important measured contributions to the body of public participation knowledge  Project: Emphasize uniqueness.  Pay attention to the questions about evaluation

15 CREATE A WINNING ENTRY  Start with the Core Values  Spend time thinking about them in relation to your project or organization.  Review past winners and finalists – take a look at the Canadian, American and Federation websites  Use clear, straightforward writing style  Make no assumptions about what the judges may know/not know about your project or organization

16 CREATE A WINNING ENTRY  Build a team to help you pull together the submission  Review the Tips and Tools at the back of the Application Kit  Map out the work and the time line  Work back from deadline: May 4th 2015 at 4:30 pm Pacific Daylight Time  Entries by email - in either Adobe PDF or MS Word formats  Entry fee - $100.00. Pay online at www.iap2cananda.ca – payment can be found in the Events Section.www.iap2cananda.ca

17 CREATE A WINNING ENTRY Build the submission  Brainstorm an outline  Gather and review the data  Start with the section on Core Values  Draft the remaining sections  Get feedback on the draft from those familiar with the project/organization

18 CREATE A WINNING ENTRY Finalize the entry.  Revise. Revise. Revise  Enhance content with web links  Add photos or images (optional)  Give careful thought to your participant references  Complete the Case Study Summary last  Complete the Application Cover Sheet, Consent Form and Check List

19 CREATE A WINNING ENTRY Submit your entry to info@iap2canada.ca by May 4, 2015 4:30 pm PDT. Don’t forget the entry fee.info@iap2canada.ca Finalists will be contacted after July 1, 2015 Awards will be announced at the Core Values Awards Gala dinner in Portland, September 10, 2015.
