TEST YOUR AIMS IQ… Spring 2012 1

Question? When inventorying my shrink wrapped packages, 2 shrink wrapped packages had only 19 instead of 20 test books. What do I do? 2

ANSWER Note the discrepancy on your packing list that was in Box 1 and bring it with you when you check in test materials. If you need more tests or answer documents, email Cindy with the quantity you need no later than April 2, 4:00. An absolute must! 3

Question? What is the #1 Testing Issue that occurred this past Fall and Spring 2011? 4

The #1 Testing Issue Labels and/or Student Information Gridded on the back of student answer documents When not done correctly, can cost students their scores and credit for having taken the AIMS Can impact AYP Cost schools in a monetary way as well: – $3,000 Last Spring – $ 290 Fall 2011 5

MORAL OF THE STORY Handwritten name on front of answer document MUST match the label 11

12 OOPS…. I put the wrong label on the answer document. What should I do???? Well, I can black it out With a black marker…correct?? ???

ANSWER NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 13

For Incorrect Labeling DO NOT attempt to remove the label NEVER EVER black out the label INSTEAD: Cover the incorrect pre-ID label with a blank white label. Then hand bubble the correct student information on the back of the answer document 14

If a Label is Blacked Out Warning: When test materials are returned to warehouse, be prepared to fill out the demographic grid for any labels that are discovered to be blacked out 15

TEST ADMINISTRATION Test Administrator and Proctor 16

Question? Do all students for AIMS 3-8 start testing on the same day? 17

ANSWER No, students in grade 3 do not test on either Writing or Science so their first day of testing will be day 2. 18

Question? A teacher tells you that her class will do better, if they start with math first and then do reading You answer that she must follow testing protocol and always start with reading and then follow with math each of the three days of reading/math testing. She can NOT start with Math Correct? 19

ANSWER That is correct. A teacher can not switch the order of testing and start with math first If this is done, it could ultimately invalidate the entire classroom of tests 20

Question? I have a student who is an 8 th grader and reads on a 3 rd grade reading level, so often during instruction I read the reading to him. So during the AIMS reading, I will need to read the reading portions to him? Correct? 21

ANSWER NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 22

ACCOMMODATIONS Reading the reading is never ever a testing accommodation that may be given to a student. The only accommodations allowed, without exception are those listed in the Testing Accommodations Guidelines for 2011-12 23

Question? Most of the students are done on a session of testing ….only 4 students are left. I have to wait until the testing session is over before I can let them leave the room. Correct? 24

ANSWER Yes! Students may not leave the room until the testing session is over. If after the testing session is over and some students need more time to finish, then they are to be escorted to the room where they will be allowed to stay until they finish and are continued to be proctored. 25

Question? Grade 5 student left a few minutes after starting Reading Part 2 (student did not start Mathematics Part 2). Which parts may student make-up when he/she returns to school? 26

ANSWER Student may not make-up Reading Part 2 Student may make-up Mathematics Part 2 A student may never go back to a section that was started but not finished. 27

Question? It is lunch time and a teacher has two students who have not finished Reading Part 1, so he told the students to go get their lunches and meet him in the library where they will be able to finish the test. He followed testing protocol….correct? 28

ANSWER NO….he did not! If lunch time approaches and students are not finished: - Collect test and answer documents - An adult escorts them to the room that has been designated for finishing testing - Lunch is brought to the students - They may not leave the room other than for bath room, one at a time

Question? 30 A student received standard accommodations for both ELL and IEP. Which accommodations are recorded on back of answer document?

ANSWER 31 1.Only ELL accommodations 2.Only IEP accommodations 3.All accommodations that apply

Question? Even though we have labels for most students, we also bubble in the information on the back to confirm that all information is correct. Is this OK? 32

ANSWER No, it is a waste of time and can result in errors. The label information will override the bubbled information. If there is a label and information bubbled on the back, the label ALWAYS trumps the information on the back If label is incorrect, do not use it. 33

Question? When students enter the testing room, we tell them they must place their backpacks in the front of the room and that if they have a cell phone, or any electronic device in their pockets, they must remove them immediately. No electronic devices are allowed at any time during testing. Correct? 34

ANSWER Yes, that is absolutely correct. The scripted directions that are read to the students, state this clearly. It is a good idea to remind them before starting to test, and proctors should be walking around the room at all times, checking for this. 35

Question? When is it ok to take a test away from a student and tell him/her that he will not be allowed to finish? 36

ANSWER Basically never! If a student is caught cheating, he is removed from the room to another room but is allowed to finish testing. Immediately after testing the situation needs to be investigated and Cindy needs to be notified. If a student is being disruptive, the same procedure is followed as above. Allow students to finish, regardless of the situation, because tests can be invalidated later if it is determined there was inappropriate testing protocol. Only ADE can determine if a test is to be invalidated!! No teacher can determine that. 37

Key Points Test Coordinators must provide a training to all staff responsible for testing Bring only the principal security agreement with you when you check in materials Please read through slides before asking questions Stanford 10 can be given over two or three days…up to each school Test administration directions must be followed explicitly! Practice test links from ADE are on TUSDStats under Resources link inside left hand side bar. 38

AIMS TESTING GOAL FOR 2012!! That all test administrators follow the Test Administration Directions 100% and there be NO missing or duplicate scores! It is the test administrators’ job as part of testing protocol to check every answer document and ultimately they are responsible for students receiving valid test scores Please stress this point!! State statute requires teachers to follow testing protocol at all times 39

Thanks for all your hard work, you truly are the BEST! 40
