2 Outline of My Talk n Japanese Regulation at 60-GHz Band and Several Applications Discussed at Japanese Standardization Council 5 years ago n Application of Millimeter-Wave Ad-hoc Wireless Access System n 60-GHz Video Distribution System

3 3 Japanese Regulation of 60-GHz

4 Japanese Regulation at 60 GHz Band 54.255966GHz Licensed bandUnlicensed band June 1999: Discussion of standardization was started Aug.2000 : 60GHz band regulation has been issued

5 Japanese Regulation of 60 GHz Unlicensed Band RF frequency59-66 GHz Maximum output power10 mW Maximum antenna gain47 dBi Frequency stabilitywithin +/-500 ppm Maximum Bandwidth2.5 GHz Spurious radiation strength100 W or less Other itemsBasically not specified Main specifications

6 Japanese Regulation of 60 GHz Licensed Band RF frequency54.25-59 GHz Maximum output power100 mW Minimum antenna gain20 dBi Frequency stabilitywithin +/-200 ppm Spurious radiation strength50 W or less Main specifications

17 60 GHz Extension of WLAN/PAN Solutions– An Example Based on Broadway The Broadway Vision: –Extend and complement 5GHz WLAN with 60 GHz to provide a solution in dense urban environments with hot spot coverage without sacrificing throughput –Provide backward compatibility with existing 5 GHz OFDM solutions –Provide total system throughput >400 Mbps via bandwidth expansion An Example Architecture: –Access points (AP) utilize full-time dual band operation –Mobile terminals (MT) utilize one band at a time –Employ Rx omni antenna to avoid MT pointing –Employ AP transmission from remote locations for full coverage – OFDM can tolerate multipath doc.: IEEE 802.15-03/473

27 Current Movement within ETST BRAN In September 2003 meeting, there was a presentation from a BROADWAY rep. to create a working group within ETSI BRAN to study the extension of existing WLANs and WPANs in the 60GHz band. (doc# : bran34d018) In September BRAN meeting, IEEE802.15.mm-WIG has been introduced. European frequency issues are under investigation for next BRAN meeting. Following companies have already expressed their support for the creation of 60GHz working group in BRAN (Motorola, France Telecom, Intracom, Thomson Multimedia, CEA LETI, IMST, TNO) doc.: IEEE 802.15-03/474r2
