A much misunderstood subject in the religious world Although almost every “Christian” group practices it in some fashion, very few attach any eternal significance to it

Thus far in our study we have examined the seven “baptisms” to which the New Testament refers Allowing the Bible to guide our thoughts, we have concluded that there is currently only one baptism, that of the Great Commission- baptism for the remission of sins

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, Ephesians 4:4, 5

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:15, 16

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:18, 19

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

We have likewise allowed the New Testament to define baptism for us It is an immersion Water is the element in which it is to be performed

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:36

Since there is only one (Ephesians 4:5), and since the New Testament plainly defines it in the fashion just noted, there can be no other “mode” and there can be no other element Thus, New Testament baptism binding on man today is immersion in water

Last week we noted that baptism likewise has a purpose We found that when God tells man to do something it must be done Likewise, when God gives man the particulars for doing something those must be obeyed

We also discovered that, though He does not always do so, whenever God gives man a reason for something’s being done, it must be done for that reason In baptism we found such an instance where God gives reason

Thus, God commands man to be baptized- It must be done God gives particulars concerning baptism (immersion in water)- It must be done in that fashion and no other God also gives purpose for it- It must be done for that purpose

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Acts 22:16

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: I Peter 3:21

Therefore, the “one baptism” of the New Testament binding on man today is the baptism of the Great Commission It is an immersion in water in order to obtain the remission of sins

If it is not obeyed in this fashion and for this reason, it is not New Testament baptism In order to please God man must do what He says, in the way He says and for the reason He says Otherwise man’s actions and faith are vain

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Luke 6:46

What does baptism accomplish? What is baptism said to do for man? Obviously, since its purpose is the remission of sins (washing away of sins; salvation) it does this Is there anything else?

Salvation is IN Christ Christ In Not Saved Christ Saved In Baptized Into Christ Romans 6:3

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6:3

Salvation is IN Christ Christ In Not Saved Christ Saved In Baptized Into Christ Romans 6:3 Galatians 3:27

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3:27

These are the only two verses in all the Bible that tell how to get “into” Christ! Both of them say baptism!

Things Done in Baptism Blessings Received Baptized The Waters of Baptism In Baptism Into Christ Put On

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3:27 Who?

Things Done in Baptism Blessings Received Baptized The Waters of Baptism In Baptism Into Christ Into His Death Put On Reach Blood

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6:3

What is the significance of being “baptized into His death?” It was “in His death” that His blood was shed

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. John 19:33, 34

What is the significance of being “baptized into His death?” It was “in His death” that His blood was shed His blood is the only cleansing agent to remove sin

For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:28

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, Revelation 1:5

What is the significance of being “baptized into His death?” It was “in His death” that His blood was shed His blood is the only cleansing agent to remove sin Thus, only by getting “into His death” can that blood be contacted

The only way the Bible reveals that one can get “into His death” or contact His cleansing blood is through baptism!

Things Done in Baptism Blessings Received Baptized Buried The Waters of Baptism In Baptism Into Christ Into His Death With Him in Put On Reach Blood Raised With Him

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

In order to be raised like Christ was raised, must be buried as Christ was buried No one can be so raised who has not been so buried In order to be raised with Christ one must be buried with Christ Baptism is the only thing that accomplishes this for man

Things Done in Baptism Blessings Received Baptized Buried Baptized The Waters of Baptism In Baptism Into Christ Into His Death With Him in Into Death Put On Reach Blood Raised With Him Raised to Life

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

In order to be raised like Christ was raised, must be buried as Christ was buried This “burial” for man is baptism One who has not been buried could never have been raised to walk “in newness of life”

Therefore, one who has not been baptized (after God’s plan) has not been buried, could not have been raised, and does not walk in newness of life (thus, is not a “new creature”)

Things Done in Baptism Blessings Received Baptized Buried Baptized Planted The Waters of Baptism In Baptism Into Christ Into His Death With Him in Into Death Together Put On Reach Blood Raised With Him Raised to Life Resurrection

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection Romans 6:5

Baptism Adds One to the Church Those baptized had their sins remitted

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

Baptism Adds One to the Church Those baptized had their sins remitted By their baptism those baptized were added to a group

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:41

Baptism Adds One to the Church Those baptized had their sins remitted By their baptism those baptized were added to a group That group was The Lord’s church

Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved. Acts 2:47 (ASV)

Baptism Adds One to the Church Those baptized had their sins remitted By their baptism those baptized were added to a group That group was The Lord’s church Why would being added to the church be so significant?

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Ephesians 5:23

Baptism Adds One to the Church Those baptized had their sins remitted By their baptism those baptized were added to a group That group was The Lord’s church No wonder those saved (baptized) were added to it- He is the Savior of it! Where else would the saved be!

What does baptism accomplish? Through it man has his sins remitted, his sins washed away, is saved Through it one is in the way (Christ), truth (Christ) and life (Christ) and has entered the door (Christ)

Through it one has redemption, forgiveness of sins, eternal life, every spiritual blessing, salvation and is a new creature This is true because these are all in Christ, and the only way to get into Christ is to be baptized into Christ

Baptism (God’s way) is the only way in which one puts on Christ, reaches His blood, and is raised to walk a new life It is only through baptism that one is added to the church of Christ (the only body He will save)

Have you been baptized God’s way- in the way He says for the reason He says? If not, you do not enjoy any of these blessings
