3 OUR GOAL OF THE DAY: To become familiar with family relationship terms Learn how to apply the terms deal with family relationships in the correct context

5 Crisis An unstable or critical situation in which the outcome will make a decisive difference for better or worse

6 Family A person or group of person joined together by blood, marriage, adoption, or other bonds who are committed to each other and provide emotional support

7 Family Life Cycle Series of stages through which an average family passes

8 Family Structures The makeup of a family group based on the relationships of the members in the family

9 Functional Family Family in which the members relate to each other in positive ways

10 Life Changes Significant events that transform individuals and families

11 Sibling A brother or sister

12 OUR GOAL TODAY IS: Identify major types of family structures

13 Family Structures The makeup of a family group based on the relationships of the members in the family

14 Types of Family Structures Nuclear Family This consists of a mother father, and one or more children born to them. Single parent family One parent raising one or more children. Blended Family Formed when two people marry and at least one already has children.

15 Types of Family Structures Extended Family –Another relative such as a grandparent or aunt, lives with the family. Adoptive Family –Parents legally adopt a child not born to them. Foster Family –Includes a child no related to the family but cared for by them as a family member.

16 Goal for the Day: Come up with one good/ positive descriptive word that explains your family.

17 GOAL OF THE DAY: Name the family life cycle stages: –Beginning, parenting, launching, retirement Examine family roles and responsibilities related to each group

18 Family Life Cycle Stages of change through which families pass Consist of four stages –Beginning –Childbearing –Parenting –Retirement/ Aging

19 Beginning Stage Happens when a couple marries Both are working to establish a career Working to furnish their first home Begins the base for future stages Exciting, yet critical, time in the life of a family

20 Parenting Stage Occurs as the children grow Parents must provide for their child’s daily needs. Cultural patterns from families of origin often clash at this family life cycle stage.

21 Launching Stage Happens when children get ready to leave the family Children have to adjust to making money and paying bills. Parents have to adjust to the independence of their children.

22 Retirement/ Aging Stage Happens when parents retire from work Brings new adjustments for the family May cause adults to feel a loss of identity Financial changes Health problems
