The rules One person (known as “1”) will be chosen to compete against the rest of the class (known as “100”) 10 points are added to the “bank” with every question the “1” gets correct.

The rules When a question is asked, the “100” have 5-10 seconds to record their answer on a whiteboard. – When I say, “MARKERS UP” you must stop writing. At the start, all “100” are “up” (sitting on their desk or standing). – Those who get it correct remain “up”. – Those who get it wrong must sit back down. – Get TWO (2) in a row correct, and you are back up!

The rules “1” wins the bank points by getting Five (5) questions in a row correct. – Those still “up” each get ½ of the bank points. If the “1” gets an answer wrong, all remaining “100” (those who are still “up”) get the points in the bank. – “1” gets ½ of the points in the bank. Then we pick a new “1” and start again!

The person with the most points at the end of class is the

Questions

Respiration Photosynthesis or Respiration: Which process has carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as a product?

Animal or plant cells: Which type of cells perform respiration? BOTH (all cells need energy to live!)

The reactants of respiration are ______ and _______ Glucose/Sugar/Food and Oxygen

A group of cells working together is called …..? A Tissue

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis or Respiration: Which process has water (H 2 O) as a reactant?

Cell Tissue Organ _________ Organism Organ System

Respiration Photosynthesis or Respiration: Which process has oxygen (O 2 ) as a reactant?

Why do some cells look different from other cells? They perform different functions (different jobs).

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis or Respiration: Which process uses energy to make food?

Na + Cl  NaCl Does the arrow point to the product or reactant? Product

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis or Respiration: Which process harnesses the energy of the sun?

The purpose of respiration is to...? Make energy (ATP) for cells

Respiration Photosynthesis or Respiration: Which process has ATP as a product?

The job of red blood cells is to ___________. Carry oxygen to your cells (and CO 2 to our lungs)

They are (approx.) opposite processes. How are photosynthesis and respiration related/connected?

A group of tissues working together is called …..? An organ

Which of the following represents an organ system? A AB

Atom (100,000 times smaller!) Which is smaller, an atom or a cell?

Which cells would need more mitochondria? B (Heart cells need lots of energy) A B

_______ and _________ are organs of the circulatory system. Heart and Blood Vessels

What are cells? The smallest/basic unit that makes up all living things.

Why is oxygen (O 2 ) important for your cells? It is used in respiration to make ATP energy.

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis or Respiration: Which process has oxygen (O 2 ) as a product?

Cell Tissue ________ Organ System Organism Organ

Only these cells can make their own food. Plant cells

What type of energy is produced by respiration? ATP

Name two specialized cells that help us move? Muscle cells, Bone cells, or Nerve Cells

Digestive The stomach and intestines are part of our _________ system ?

“Fresh Air” (To recycle the CO 2 we breathe out into O 2 that we breathe in!) Why might it be a good idea to have lots of indoor plants ?

What is the function of chloroplasts? Site of photosynthesis in plants (make glucose/sugar)

It would cease to exist. What would happen to life on Earth if plants could no longer perform photosynthesis?

What are two organelles involved in energy use and production? Chloroplasts and Mitochondria

Red blood cells, nerve cells, and skin cells are ______________ to perform certain jobs. specialized

CO 2 + H 2 O + C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 + H 2 0 What is the chemical reaction for photosynthesis ?

What does photosynthesis mean? Photo = light Synthesis = building a whole from parts Photosynthesis ~ building something (glucose) with light!

O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6 CO 2 + H 2 0 + ATP What is the chemical reaction for respiration ?

Last Question: How are heart muscle cells different from other muscle cells? They do not have to rest after they work.
