3 Overview Read the entire essay all the way through one time without making comments Read again making notes to yourself Respond to all the bullet points listed on page 112 In addition: Comment on how well the writer transitions between categories and paragraphs Comment on how well the writer describes and defines each category Check MLA formatting Note any grammar or punctuation issues you notice – it is OK if you aren’t sure.

4 Things to keep in mind… Be critical but respectful Don’t be afraid to be critical Don’t take comments too personally Be specific with comments and be sure to give examples Respond to the list on page 112 carefully Responses should not be too short or vague Make suggestions instead of corrections

5 What to do with comments Consider comments as options not as corrections Think about each comment before deciding if you want to use it or not Don’t take comments personally Read p. 113-114 for more specific suggestions

9 In-text quotations Quote song lyrics like you would a poem: with breaks represented with a slash and a space: “With the lights out/ it’s less dangerous/ here we are now/ entertain us” (Nirvana).
