Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Engineering Diploma Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions An Approach to Unit Delivery and Assessment Pneumatics Sorter

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Next > Student textbook: Edexcel Engineering level 2 higher diploma L2 U4 Producing engineering solutions: Approach given here is formed by following the awarding bodies: Learning outcomes Assessment tasks It is not ‘design’ (this is covered by Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design) Health and safety – procedures, standards and risk assessment in engineering activities (LO.1) Learning outcomes: Planning – plan an engineering product or service (LO.2) Select materials, parts or components (LO.3) Implementation - processes, tools and equipment to make product or carry out service (LO.4) Inspection – apply to product or service (LO.5)

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions LJ pneumatics module contains an engineering solution for a parts sorting system in a manufacturing plant Engineering theme: It covers: Planning Installation Inspection and testing Understanding its processes The Pneumatics module activities are used for acquiring knowledge and skills during unit delivery Next > The pneumatic sorter within the module is used for the assessment tasks as evidence of work

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Assessment Task 1 – Health and safety Hazards (in general) – think about engineering processes and warning signs Personal protective equipment (PPE) – to protect against these hazards Pneumatics trainer and industrial equivalent (specific) – moving parts, compressed air, electricity and noise Risk assessment Environment - tidiness, machinery guards, and environment markings and warnings Next > Staff conduct – training and supervision

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Next > Assessment Task 2 – Planning Planning Process – create work instructions/job sheets Plumbing Circuit wiring Testing system Pneumatics module provides the necessary knowledge and skills PowerPoint presentations Practical tasks Simulation tasks Research tasks Research sorting system components and processes: Use of compressed air Types of cylinders Symbols and circuit diagrams 3-port valve Solenoid valve Sensors and logic conditioning Sequencing Speed control A full list of module activities is provided

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Next > Assessment Task 3 – Carrying out and inspection Follow plan to build system Evaluate engineering solution against plan Prior to turn on - what visual checks? Turn on – system checks manual sequence advance then automatic Evaluate engineering solution against simulation Future maintenance scheduling

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Your task is to install a parts sorting system into a factory. The design team has provided their design for the sorting system. As an engineering fitter, who is going to install and test the system, you will need to find out how the pneumatic and electronic control systems work. You will also need to consider the health and safety aspects and ensure a risk assessment is undertaken. Careful planning is needed, ensuring work instructions are produced. Design from design team Delivery and assessment approach: Explain the requirements of the assessed tasks to students Assessment brief and tasks are provided An example scheme of work is provided that enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills to complete the assessed tasks The scheme of work states students should work through assignments 1 to 9 of the Pneumatics module Design from design team Next >

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Delivery and assessment approach: The scheme of work also refers to other sources: Student textbook Internet sites Ideas for visits LJ support documents Next > LJ Support documents include: Health and safety – a range of worksheets Risk assessment – examples and a template Planning – example engineering production plan and test documents, along with a template

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Delivery and assessment approach: Next > The student is to collect evidence during the assessed tasks, by producing: Risk assessment Engineering operation plan Components list Circuit diagram Test schedule Evaluation report System photographs

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Delivery and assessment approach: Next > The specification requires students to be aware of a range of technologies. The scheme of work includes the following: 1.ST260 Mechanisms module (Inevitably pneumatic systems provide power for mechanical systems): Mechanical systems & motion Levers Cams Friction 2.ST280 Hydraulics module (An alternative fluid power technology that reinforces concepts): Principles and applications of hydraulics Basic hydraulic laws Actuators Speed control of cylinders

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Delivery and assessment approach: Next > 3.ST140 Basic Electricity module: Switches Safety and protection devices Motors 4.ST450 Electronic Circuits module: Automatic circuits Alarms Electronics is pervasive in modern engineering and it is required in the majority of engineering systems. Consider completing unit 5 before unit 4. If this is not practical, useful areas to cover include: UnitTitleGLH 1Exploring the Engineering World60 2Investigating Engineering Design60 3Engineering Applications of Computers60 4Producing Engineering Solutions60 5Electrical and Electronic Circuits and Systems30 6Application of Manufacturing Techniques in Engineering60 7Applications of Maintenance Techniques in Engineering30 8 Exploring Engineering Innovation, Enterprise and Technological Advancements 60

Level 2 Unit 4 Producing Engineering Solutions Extending the brief An assessment brief and task sheets guide students in carrying out the three assessed tasks Two options are provided to extend the brief to include a ‘make’ element in the assessed tasks It provides students with an opportunity to use hand and/or machine tools Students should be given a design that can be made using the centre’s facilities Some design options, that meet the requirements of the extension briefs, are provided in the scheme of work End >
