Listening Answers to Part 1 1.They are trying to control and prevent diseases. 2. Jane usually asks people if they have a fever, headache or sore throat. She also asks when they got sick. 3. She uses the information she collects to find out what caused the disease. 4. Some detectives work in a laboratory, and others like Jane, travel to areas there a disease has broken out to collect information.

Goes out about every 3 months Finds out about new diseases from doctors and hospitals. Some times visits areas Sometimes afraid but always careful You can protect yourselves by washing hands and not going to crowded places; see a doctor if you’re sick

Speaking: What’s the most serious social problem today? Sample: I think that AIDS is the most serious problem because millions of people are dying from the disease and there is no cure for it. Another reason is that anyone can get AIDS and we must make sure that everyone knows how to protect themselves. Because so many people are living with AIDS, we must learn to treat them properly and not make their life more difficult. If we were to learn more about AIDS, we could stop the disease and help those who have it.

I think that drugs like cocaine are the most serious problem because it kills people and creates other problems, for example crime. This problem is more serious than AIDS. First, It’s easier to protect yourself against AIDS. Second, drugs destroy the lives of more people than just the one who is using the drugs.

To decide which problem is the most serious, we must look at all parts of the problem. Alcohol is, in my opinion, the most serious problem. One reason is that so many people drink and that it is often thought to be fun or cool to drink. Young people, especially men, are led to believe that drinking alcohol is normal and safe. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Drinking damages your brain and your body and causes many other problems. When people get drunk, they act

irresponsibly and often get violent. Drunken husbands beat up their families; drunken youngsters destroy things and disturb the peace, sometimes even committing crimes. If people were to stop drinking they could enjoy a healthier and safer life.
