2. Welcome Parents! Welcome to your child’s first-grade year. I am excited to share this fun-filled year with your child. It is truly an amazing year of growth and development.

3. School Policies ABSENCES Please call and let us know of your child ’ s absence. If you are unable to call, a note signed by you, the parent, describing the reason for the absences should be sent upon your child ’ s return to school. TARDIES Your child is considered tardy after 8:00. Tardies are entered into the computer system and tracked. Announcements begin at 7:50, so if your child arrives by 7:45 he/she should be on time.

4. A reading vocabulary list for the stories will be stapled in your child’s Green Homework Folder. It is very important that you practice the words with your child. Your child will be held accountable for knowing these words and will be tested on them as we finish the stories. During the next few weeks, we will begin sending home Take Home/Supplemental Readers. These are to be read by the student orally to someone at home. The purpose of these books is to provide additional reading practice for your child. This 20 minute time period at home is very important to your child’s reading development. Class Policies

5. I use Whole Brain Teaching strategies and include the rules in this process. They include the following rules: 1. Follow directions quickly. 2. Raise your hand for permission to speak. 3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat. 4. Make smart choices. 5. Make your dear teacher happy. We earn smiley or frowns on the scoreboard each day. Class Rules

6. This year I will send home Scholastic book orders. This is a great way to order books and ebooks for your child. You may combine orders, order online if you wish, and then send in one check or use a credit card online. Our school will also host two book fairs in the library. Book Orders

7. Your child is provided with many different opportunities to increase his/her reading ability. Our class visits the library every Wednesday and each child may check out a library book, provided previously checked out books have been returned.

8. SPELLING The word lists for each six weeks will be stapled into your child’s Green Homework Folder. Please be sure your child practices the spelling words each week. The spelling tests will be given on Fridays.

9. We feel that you and your child are part of the Speegleville “Family“once you enter our doors. I hope you will feel the love we give to the children. If you have questions this year, please email or phone after school.
