1 DEMOCRATIC IDEALS: A CAUSE OF THE CIVIL WAR By: Mrs. Foote

2 What are “democratic ideals”? ◦ These are the ideas outlined in the constitution about freedom in America. ◦ Included the rights to: “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” –Call to Freedom (pg. 191) ◦ These “ideals” didn’t address all people’s rights: ◦ What about women? ◦ Slaves? The writers of the Declaration of Independence “could not ignore the difference between the ideals of liberty and the practice of slavery. Some colonists wanted the principle of ‘all men are created equal’ to apply to all people.” - Call to Freedom (pg. 193) Susan B. Anthony (left) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were pioneers in the fight for equal suffrage and women's rights.

3 The American Revolution Connection ◦ In 1776, slavery was legal in all the colonies. ◦ Some patriots felt that having slavery in America was no different than living under King George’s rule. ◦ “Massachusetts abolished slavery in 1783, and by 1784, the rest of New England also had taken steps to end slavery.” - Call to Freedom (pg. 193)

4 “Democratic ideals” & the Civil War ◦ Free states in the North began to question whether or not the freedoms outlined in the constitution were being followed. ◦ Slave states in the South claimed that the constitution gave them the right to make choices about issues like slavery. ◦ In the end, both groups used “democratic ideals” as a justification for going to war. A collecting card from 1863 shows an African American Union soldier bayonetting a Confederate soldier. Approximately 180,000 African Americans served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
