4 POSITIVE TALK  “I” Statements  Using contingencies  Eliciting vs. Imposing consequences  Help kids “visualize” positives  “Empathy” is the foundation of emotional intelligence.  “Hope” Building

5 The Compliance Burger Bun- Start with a positive statement Cheese- Point out current, unexpected behavior Meat- State expected behavior 'Let-Us'- Give prompt followed by space and tim Bun- Return and praise expected behavior Bun- "Thanks for sitting quietly!" Cheese- "I see you are still reading your book." Meat- "Right now the class is working on math." 'Let-Us'- "Make a good choice to get your math out, and I will check back with you." Bun- "I see you have your math out... Great choice! Are you going to start on the front or back?"

6 CHOICE  Everyone (adults too) prefer choices!  Many, frequent choices =empowerment Practice using these short phrases: Would you rather ____ or ____? What would be best for you, ___ or ___?
