DEVELOPING AND SHARING RESOURCES Embedding Learning Development to enhance student experience

Outline Brief presentation of project so far Where we are now Hands on exploration of website Questions: How are students engaged through technology? How useful is the resource? How can we as a community improve and add to it? Feedback on how staff engage students through technology Survey and discussion on embedding experiences

The integration of learning development into the student experience University Teaching and Learning Project - £15,000 funding Aim to find and share examples of good practice in integrating learning development to enhance student experience and skills, initially across the University and eventually across the HE community Collaboration of Learning Developers and Subject staff

Outcomes A set of generic principles to promote the process of integrating Learning development (LD) into curricula at all levels A framework signposting opportunities to embed or integrate LD into curricula at all levels across the University Examples of good practice based on case studies http://embeddingskills.hud.ac.uk

Methodology Mapping Template to find out where skills were practised, whether they were specifically taught and if so who taught them Case study templates were devised and completed throughout the University Attitudes to embedding survey conducted Website built using an open source tool named Drupal (http://drupal.org/ ) and promoted through Teaching & Learning Committees and conferenceshttp://drupal.org/

Where are we now? “The Committee felt that the outcomes of the project emphasised the need to view the development of a course as a whole rather than being applied on a module basis. This approach would allow teams to capture the overall progression of a student across all taught years whilst identifying any gaps in delivery or duplication assessment. It was agreed that the mapping template should be addressed as part of the course development rather than a requirement for the validation event. Teams should reflect their incorporation of skills development in the Teaching and Learning section of the Programme Specification Document. This would apply for all new course validations and subject review/revalidations with immediate effect.” University Teaching & Learning Committee, November 2011, minute ref. 5.3

Next steps Embedding Skills and Integrating Learning Development Day at Leicester Phase 2 of University of Huddersfield Project – funding applied for: Progressive Learning Development: an Interactive resource for Curriculum Design Developing a national resource as part of the ALDinHE Embedding Task and Finish Group
