1 AIM: How can we understand the research project? DO NOW: Read the statement below and list three pros and three cons. School should start later in the day. Homework: Two printed out articles to support your thesis.

2 What are we doing today? Return textbooks Introduce and understand summer reading…contract www.sewanhaka.k12.ny.us Explain the research project and timeline

3 Agenda for the next 6 days Today: Read the article, annotate, write and think, understand your thesis. Bring in two printed out articles for homework (counts as 3 homeworks…that’s A LOT!) Monday: Read and annotate your articles. Discuss establishing a main point. Create one main point that can be supported with all three sources. Select facts to support your main point. Understand an in text citation. Homework: Cite each source using www.citationmachine.net Tuesday: Introduce the outline for your project. Complete the outline in class with citations. (classwork grade 100 or 0). Type your outline for homework. Use proper format Wednesday: Typed project due (counts 2x towards your project average…that’s A LOT!) at the beginning of class. (-10 for every day it is late) In class presentations. Thursday/Friday/Monday: makeup assignments for anyone who was absent…movie for anyone who does not owe work.

4 What is a main point? Main point: Fact 1 from source 1: Fact 2 from source 2: Fact 3 from source 3: 1. Read your three sources 2. Mark up your three sources 3. Read what you underlined and come up with one main idea/point which supports your thesis 4. Select the best fact from each of your three sources to use to back up your main point YOUR MAIN POINT IS NOT YOUR THESIS!!!

5 Monday’s Homework: In text citations www.citationmachine.net WebsiteMLA FORMAT Book Newspaper article Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work. Plagiarism is considered academic dishonesty and a breach of journalistic ethics. It is subject to sanctions like penalties, suspension, and even expulsion. Without proper citations your work is plagiarism.

6 Commentary The purpose of commentary is to connect your fact to your thesis. Commentary comes from your head not from a book or webpage. Commentary is the most significant part of your paper because it is what makes a research paper yours. Think before you write…thoughtful/insightful commentary is what determines your grade.

7 Homework Use your completed outline from class to type your introduction and body paragraph. Your Name Your Instructor’s Name Your Class Information(English Period___) Your Paper’s Due Date (11 June 2014) Settings: Font: Arial. Font Size: set the font size to be twelve (12) throughout your research paper, including your paper’s title. Never set the font site larger than 12. Margins: 1-inch for top/bottom/right/left throughout your paper. Double-space: double-space throughout your paper. Don’t add extra spaces (besides double-space) between your headings, your title and your paragraphs.
