2 Pre-Class 11/20/09 What is plagiarism, and how can we avoid it? Definition of Plagiarism taken from Merriam- Webster Dictionary: “the act of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.” How can we avoid this? -- By giving credit to the original author!

3 Pre-Class 11/20/09 Write a 5 sentence explanation of why plagiarism is academically dishonest (cheating). Use the definition in your answer: Definition of Plagiarism taken from Merriam-Webster Dictionary: “the act of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.”

5 Quotation Format -- Books (MLA)  Requirements: 1. Give credit to the author in your introduction to the quote. 2. Use the quote exactly as it is written. 3. Place the quote in the “quotation marks” 4. Follow the quote with the page number in parentheses As Mr. Walker stated in his book, “the example quote goes here” (164).

6 Quotation Notes  The simple way to writing using quotes:  When writing a paragraph using a quote… 1. Introduce the quote 2. Include the quote (using the MLA format) 3. Discuss what the quote means.

7 Example  Teaching students how to use quotes can be difficult at first. Each student must be taught a number of steps to follow the MLA format. One step is teaching the students how to write their quotes. Mr. Walker gives an example of quotations in his book. He states that “the example quote goes here” (164). Mr. Walker’s example is used to describe the form quotations should follow under MLA.  What step is bolded?  What step is italicized?  What step is underlined?

9 Assignment using quotes:  Open your books to page 122  We will Read about Benjamin Banneker on page 122 and take notes.  Start Now – HW for weekend.  What is Banneker’s view of Jefferson and his written works. Explain providing quoted examples from the text.  Use the MLA quotation format you learned today in class when using quotes in your answer!
