First conceived in 1998  To support the monitoring needed to pursue European policies for sustainable use and protection of the environment  Monitoring system includes space, in situ and modelling components  Services delivering benefits are part of GMES  GMES is viewed as the European level contribution to GEO  Sustainability of monitoring system is a key issue

3. www.mersea.eu.org IGST – Exeter - 14 November 2005 GMES – Fast track workshops  3 fast-track services identified for implementation by 2008 (2012): marine, land and emergency response  Workshop held 27-28 October to review fast-track status of marine component  Break-out sessions on:  needs and requirements  Implementation  Sustainability (including dependence on observations)  Recommendations:  Implement a network of regional and global forecast systems  Support for content of GMES space component programme  Commission is likely to set up an Implementation Group
