CITATIONS AND WORKS CITED MLA FORMAT FOR REFERENCES

MLA FORMAT The Modern Language Association uses a certain format to cite sources. I use this format because it does not require a computer to be effective and tidy.

THE BASIC MLA FORMAT. Book: Author’s surname, Author’s given name, “Name of article.” Name of Book. Ed. Editor’s name. City of publication: Publisher. Year of publication. Page numbers. Webpage: Author’s last name, Author’s given name. “Name of webpage.” Name of Website. Name of publisher. Year of publication. Web. Date of Access.

Gathering information When you find information that might be useful to you, write it down on one of the note sheets I provide for you. Make sure you write down all the bibliographic information first; it saves you time and energy to write down that info first.

Essential Bibliographic Information All books Author’s name Book Title Place of publication Publisher Year of publication Page numbers Edited books Names of editors Article/chapter titles Names of article authors Call Number

Online sources. I will allow sources from published books found online, as long as you can still make reference to all publishing information and page numbers. There are only 2 legitimate places to get free online book information: –Archive.org –Google Books. I will not provide class time for internet research

Google Books Google Books has scanned loads of books. Many have access limitations. Books with “Preview” only may only let you see a few pages, or not let you see the images. Make sure you click “Preview and Full View” or “Full View.” You can also search the text

The Internet Archive Archive.org allows you to view the full text of many books in the public domain (no longer under copyright) This is especially useful for primary sources. You can search the text.

Archive.org’s Microfiche collection The Internet Archive also contains many scans of Microfiche, which often offer the most “meaty” primary sources possible. You might find these in other texts, but it sometimes feels more “real” to see them as the original people saw them.

Photocopying Photocopying a few pages allows you to highlight or underline information that’s important to you. However, if you photocopy, remember to write the page numbers on the photocopied pages. Also copy the page in the book with all the publishing information.

Final notes. If, on your way to studying one topic, you discover a lot of information on another topic, feel free to change or adjust your topic. It is more difficult to find information on some topics than others.
