Renewable and non- renewable sources for energy in our countries and effects of radiation on human health.

Diffrent seasons, diffrent problems!

RENEWABLE ENERGIES Definition:The power of renewable energy from the sun, is thought to depletion of energy sources that do not harm the environment. Examples: 1-Hydroelectric Energy: Established rivers, dams, electricity is generated through motion of the water.

Poland hydro energy Hydroelectric power plant on the Vistula. Due to the low-lying area of the country, possibilities of using Polish rivers are not too remarkable. Currently operate here already 127 large power plants and approximately 300 small ones.

 Coal is a non-renewable energy source because it takes millions of years to create. The energy in coal comes from the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago, when the earth was partly covered with swampy forests. Non-renewable Nuclear energy is energy in the nucleus of an atom. Atoms are tiny particles that make up every object in the universe. There is enormous energy in the bonds that hold atoms together. Nuclear energy can be used to make electricity. But first the energy must be released. It can be released from atoms in two ways: nuclear fusion and nuclear fission. Nuclear energy The United States produces half of its electricity from coal. China uses coal to generate more than three- fourths of its electricity. Australia, Poland, and South Africa produce an even greater percentage. Overall, coal makes up 2/5 of the world’s electricity generation. The United States produces more nuclear- generated electricity than any other country, nearly 1/3 of the world’s total. The second largest producer is France, which generates more than 3/4 of its electricity in nuclear reactors. RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES- BULGARIA -

5 -Biomass (plant and animal waste) Energy: Using energy derived from plant and animal waste is called biomass energy.

BIOMASS 2 - WOOD PELLETS The cheapest energy in developped countries (the pelletizing plants for food cattle may be used) : 0,033 € / kWh nuclear electricity 0,12 € / kWh FRANCE 4 times cheaper than electricity

During this year, the sun throws upon the earth four thousand times more energy than we consume. What can you get with solar energy? We can get electricity and heat in a natural way without affecting the environment.

BIOMASS 3 - Methanation The biomass anaerobic fermentation creates biogas which contains 60% methane, which is a fuel. This gas may be transformed by cogeneration into hot water and electricity France

EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON HUMAN HEALTH There are many effects of radiation on humans.

RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES- BULGARIA - 5 What comes from radioactive components?  When the radioactive components disintegrate, they release ionizing rays. They are called this way because they convert the neutral atoms to positive or negative ions. These rays can be alpha-, beta-, gamma-, x-rays, cosmic and neutral.  Some sources of ionizing rays are: - all devices and radioactive components ; - all areas of work, which are connected with cultivation, production, usage, conservation and transportation of natural and other kinds of sources of ionizing rays, as well as radioactive waste in medicine and manufacturing.

14 Poland The diseases, which can manifest themselves at a later date include: - Skin cancer; - Leukemia; - Gastrointestinal disease; - Bone disease ;

Radon … Radon is a naturally radioactive gas. It comes from the decay of uranium which is present in the earth's crust. It exists mainly in granitic and volcanic soils. Radon decay is solid : it stays in your lungs ! It is the second cause of lung cancer, after tobacco. 1 200/ 3 000 deaths a year. France 12/15
