1 Applecross SHS Year 7 MAP Program – a Transition to High School

2 Rationale MAP Program stands for our school values Mutual Respect Achievement Personal Best Program aims to assist Year 7s explore goals & individual pathways, build new friendships, develop resilience and social capacity and understand some of the foundation skills required for a successful high school life. Foundation skills include literacy, inquiry process, ICT protocols and study skills.

3 Opportunity In 2014 a ‘Personal Best’ program for Years 8 – 10 was offered covering a variety of topics including study skills, well-being, cyber safety and Inquiry Skills sessions. A similar program was proposed for the Year 7 timetable commencing 2015 to be delivered by selected Year 7 class teachers. Program was developed by a committee of teachers, Student Services Program Co-ordinator, Deputy and the teacher-librarian.

4 Organisation Students have a weekly 1 hour lesson on a Monday. Students are not formally assessed but must keep a portfolio of evidence (worksheets and activities) which is shown to parents. Challenge is to devise lessons suited to a variety of abilities which will be taken by other class teachers.

Topics include: Orientation to High School File organisation, Diary use, Homework and Time Management Introduction to school ICT network and Library** Making friends and participating in school life Keyboard skills Inquiry skills** Notemaking Personal and Cyber safety Resilience and protective behaviours Problem solving and teamwork

6 Lesson Lesson: Introduction to the School Network and Library Resources Learning Intentions: Students to be able to access & navigate: Shared drive and ‘My documents’ Student portal Library search ‘Aims’ ‘Connect’ and ‘Webmail’ – communication tools Clickview World Book Online Choose correct printer for their documents

10 Library Search To locate books and other resources select the type of search you require and enter your search term 10

11 Communicating: Logging on to Connect & Webmail Your teacher may post messages and homework for your class via Connect. To sign in: Type your network username and password Make sure you click the ‘Appropriate Use Of Online Services’ box! 11

12 World Book Online World Book Online is an excellent resource for research. You can access different databases and find articles, audio-visuals, websites, maps, and other reference tools. Find World Book on the Student Portal! 12

14 Feedback Subject teachers who delivered the lesson were generally positive and able to follow the lesson plan Visiting the classes, observed that students were meaningfully engaged in the ICT activity Some technical issues arose with computer access, but students could work in pairs on the activity

15 Lesson: Inquiry Process Learning intentions: To introduce students to the Inquiry Process To enable students to develop an organised approach to their research tasks To focus students on identifying, locating, and selecting relevant information Lesson to consist of: Powerpoint presentation outlining a six step Inquiry Process model Activity – students to be given focus questions and sample texts on Ancient Rome and asked to locate and select relevant information
