4 Who the heck is Musashi? Although relatively unknown in the U.S.A., Musashi was a very famous Japanese swordsman who practiced kenjutsu, the predecessor of kendo (fighting with fake swords), kenjutsu is fighting with real swords in life or death battles. Musashi was arguably the best swordsman in all of Japan during his lifetime. Musashi fought and won 60 kenjutsu matches and died of old age.

8 MUSASHI THE MOVIE There were many movies made about Musashi, but one, wait, actually three stand out from the rest. These movies are the Samurai Trilogy. Made about 50 years ago, this trilogy is thought of as the Japanese Gone With the Wind because of its popularity in Japan. These movies are based on the book Musashi and chronicle Musashi’s life.

9 Musashi seems to turn up everywhere, doesn’t he? In the videogame Brave Fencer Musashi for the Playstation, a child with freakishly deformed hair named Musashi goes on a quest, and anyways, its not a very good game. The game is extremely loosely based on the real Musashi and has a stupid title to boot.

12 1584 saw the birth of one of the greatest swordsmen in the known world, Miyamoto Musashi! Having his first fencing duel at 13, he defeated and killed the regionally famous Arima Kibei. After a few more years of normal life Musashi dueled again at 16, winning of course. A few years later, in 1605, Musashi traveled to Kyoto to see if there were any fencers as good as him. Musashi challenged Yoshioka Genzaemon of the Yoshioka family, the Yoshioka family weremartial arts instructors for a past shogun. Of course, Musashi won, but he spared Yoshioka Genzaemon. That was not the end ofMusashi’s problems with the Yoshioka family. Yoshioka Genzaemon’s relatives challenged Musashi two more times to restore the family honor, Musashi won the first one but the second one wasn’t a duel, but an ambush! Miraculously, Musashi survived a trap of more than 80 samurai. Musashi dueled many more times after that, recording about 60 duels. One of Musashi’s last duels was one with Sasaki Ganryu Kojiro, Musashi defeated Kojiro with a wooden sword carved out of an oar. For the rest of his life, Musashi lived in a cave and wrote his book, Book of Five Rings.
