TPCASTT: “I Hear America Singing” T: Title (questions and brainstorming on the title) P: Paraphrasing (put each stanza into your own words) C: Connotations (look carefully at diction [word choice] and any use of figurative language, such as metaphors and symbols; also, listen for interesting sound devices such as alliteration and rhyme)

The Harlem Renaissance It is your job to figure out the definition, purpose, and main ideas behind the Harlem Renaissance over the next two weeks. We’ll see what you can learn from looking at: Poetry Art Music

“The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain” Please silently work through Hughes’ essay; focus on the following ideas and issues: 1. What do you infer was the purpose of the Harlem Renaissance, based upon this essay? 2. What is Hughes' main argument about one's culture and heritage, and do you agree? 3. Highlight and comment on what you see as Hughes’ thesis.
