2 Welcome to Jeffrey B. Dolbare Library Managed by: Media Specialist Debra Baxter

3 Library Hours The library is open from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.

4 Sign In Welcome to the Library! Please sign your name, date, time and teacher if you are a student in grades 7-12. If you are with your class and teacher you do not need to sign in.

5 Library Cards Everyone will be issued a library barcode/ID. We do not have a card system You will NOT be allowed to checkout resources from the library with a lost book (please read Parent Handbook and below ) Library books issued to students are the responsibility of parents. Any book lost or damaged must be paid for before the student is allowed to check out additional books. (This carries over from year to year.)

6 Check it out = The media specialist scans the library barcodes on the front of the books. = It is your responsibility to note the due date in your notebook or folder. = We checkout books for two weeks. = Students may only check out 2 books at a time.

7 Check In ALWAYS look for Mrs. Debbie when you first enter the library. You, the student, are responsible for checking your library book in when you return it. Move your book slowly and carefully under the barcode scanner to check-in. Do not lift scanner from cradle. Ask for help if you have problems checking in your book. After you have checked your book in, please place it neatly on the cart in the correct area.

8 Books due back You may check out two books. Books are due back in two weeks from the checkout date. Special arrangements can be made if a project requires extra resources. Books may be renewed. Be organized and careful to record your due back date in a notebook or calendar.

9 Reference Books Reference books may not be checked out. Bring your notes and research tools to copy information from the Vertical Files, Encyclopedia, Almanac and other sources

10 Fines You must replace your book if you lose it. Books start at $10.00 replacement value. No daily or weekly fines. For continuing service, you must resolve your lost book or pay for it.

11 Library Rules Use the “Bee Rules” Speed limit is walking. Respect books and equipment. No food or drinks. Use a shelf marker. Use the bookcart to sort your fiction / non fiction books.

12 Copies Copies from reference sources or Internet are free if used for research or homework. Fees of $.25 per page will be charged for other types of copying or printing.

13 Computers There are 2 computer workstations that students can use. Use computer equipment properly and follow posted rules. ATHENA, Microsoft Word, Alabama Virtual Library and pre- approved websites are available for study and research purposes.

14 Accelerated Reading Program Students my take an AR test in their classrooms or in the Library Use computer equipment properly and follow posted rules Students must have their own password and the book’s title and author written on their AR FOLDER. Place book to the book cart before you test. Staff suggest you read the book at least 2 or 3 times before you take a test.

15 Using ATHENA Ask to use a workstation with your project notes and assignments in hand. Search the library catalog –Athena- for books and materials Follow the rules carefully; they are posted If you have questions, please ask Mrs. Debbie.

16 Internet To use the Internet you must have an “Internet Acceptable Use” parental permission form on file indicating you and your parents have read and understand the MCPSS guidelines, and your parents have given their permission for you to be online. Use of the Internet should be school related. The use of the Internet and the computer is a privilege, not a right. Failure to comply or follow the guidelines set by the WCBE and the library will result in lose of computer privileges. Teacher approved websites are listed in the student web curriculum guide.

17 Alabama Virtual Library You do not need a Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) card in the Fruitdale High Library. If you don’t have an AVL card, you can ask for one to be issued to you. Your Public Librarian will issue an AVL card for free.

18 Recreational Reading Recreational reading is encouraged. “Bee Rules” are posted. You lose you library privileges if you don’t follow the rules.
