The evolution of HR David Woodward Chief Information Officer

Introduction 30 minutes – exploration into the latest thinking in technology trends, why its important and relevant the HR/payroll world and If nothing else - you will learn some new terminologies you can impress your friends and family with!

The 5 generations of business computing 1.Mainframes/mini computer – proprietary, expensive, green screen systems 2.Unix based systems still green screen 3.PC’s and client/server Windows based, modern databases 4.Immature web - only really suited for simple applications 5.Mature web – sophisticated applications now possible

What’s wrong with the software industry? Business model built on large upfront fees Complex systems require extensive bespoke Many faults require expense correction New versions driven by feature drive Upgrades vital to ensure supportability and to drive consultancy revenue Most extreme examples with large ERP systems – SAP/Oracle - ERP fatigue Expensive hardware configurations/dependence on internal or outsourced IT function Curse of the upgrade raises its ugly head Customers tiring of this ecosystem There must be a better way!

Would you have on-premise electricity? Traditional software SaaS/On-demand model

SaaS/On-demand characteristics Software-as-a-Service or On-demand terms used to describe new wave of business application deployed across the internet –Low initial cost – subscription pricing –Comparatively rapid implementation –Ease of configuration –Low upgrade costs –Minimal disruptions during upgrades –Utility style switch on –Shorter contractual terms

SaaS maturity levels level 1 - Traditional Application Service Provider (ASP) model, dating back to the 1990s. Each customer has own customised version of the hosted application, runs its own instance of the application on the host's servers level 2 - The vendor hosts separate instance of application for each customer. All instances use the same code implementation, and the vendor partly meets customers' needs by providing configuration options that allow customer to change how application looks and behaves level 3 - The vendor runs a single instance serving every customer, configurable metadata provides unique user experience and feature sets. Security policies ensure that each customer's data is kept separate from that of other customers; there is no indication that the application instance is being shared among multiple tenants level 4 - The vendor hosts multiple customers on load-balanced farm, with each customer's data kept separate, and with configurable metadata providing a unique user experience and feature set

Why SaaS/On-demand is now possible Wide availability of the PC Computing becoming a commodity: –In the past corporate mainframes were seen as strategic advantages –More recently, the applications were viewed as strategic –Today, we know it’s the business processes and the data itself— customer/employee records, workflows Applications are standardising Parameterised applications a reality - metadata Web systems are reliable Security is trusted/proven Wide Area Network's bandwidth has grown drastically following Moore's Law (more than 100% increase each 24 months)
