Good Morning 278, I hope you enjoyed your long weekend! Today is a new day and a new quarter, so a fresh start is good for all of us. Our goals for this week is to wrap up the parts of the cell today. Tomorrow your quiz will be on using a microscope and naming parts of a cell. On Friday, we will talk about cells and microbes and how they play a part in diseases like the plague.

Do Now What are all the parts of the cell that you know? What roles do they have in the cell? PLEASE HAVE YOUR CELL BROCHURE IN THE HW CORNER READY TO COLLECT! WE WILL LOOK AT A FEW EXAMPLES TODAY IF WE HAVE TIME.

Agenda Wednesday: Review Cell Organelles and how to use Microscopes Thursday: Quiz on cell organelles and microscopes, look at cells/microbes/ viruses Friday: Microbes Classification Lab

2 types of cells Prokaryote: Cells that lack a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles Eukaryote: Cells that have a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles

Nucleus Function: Contains the DNA and tells the cell what to do What it’s like: small, wrapped around by the nuclear membrane inside the cell Drawing

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Function: packages proteins for the cell to use when needed What it’s like: ribbon-like feature inside the cell, does NOT have ribosomes Drawing:

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Function: packages proteins for the cell to use when needed What it’s like: ribbon-like feature inside the cell, does have ribosomes (causing it to look “rough”) Drawing:

Cytoskeleton Function: Provides support and structure for the cell What it’s like: protein filaments help the cell maintain its shape and how it moves Drawing

Cytoplasm Function: Contains all the cell’s organelles within the cell What it’s like: jelly-like substance that contains the parts within a cell and has nutrients Drawing

Mitochondria Function: Provides energy to the cell What it’s like: rod like structures within the cell that produces ATP (cell’s form of energy) Drawing:

Cell membrane Function: surrounds and protects all the organelles within the cell What its like: semi-permeable; allows some materials in and keeps other things out Drawing:

Cell Wall Function: surrounds and protects all the organelles within the cell ONLY FOR PLANT CELLS, provides extra support What its like: semi-permeable; allows some materials in and keeps other things out Drawing:

Chloroplast Function: A structure in the cell of plants and some other organisms that captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce food. What it’s like: green, round organelles inside a cell Drawing:

Vacuole A sac inside a cell that acts as a storage area. What it’s like: large, looks like empty space Drawing:

Lysosome A cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones. What it’s like: small, round Drawing

Parts of a microscope
