2 The New England Colonies Triangular Trade was the exchange of goods between the 13 Colonies, Africa, and the West Indies Rum and Iron were sent from New England to Africa Slaves from Africa to the West Indies (Middle Passage) Molasses and slave from the West Indies back to the Colonies

3 The New England Colonies Subsistence Farming is growing just enough food for yourself and sometimes having some extra to trade. Short growing season Towns and Cities Most farmers lived near a town. The meetinghouse was where they met to make laws, have town meetings, and for religious services. Farmers traded with shopkeepers and towns along the coast shipped food and raw materials to England which in return shipped back finish goods.

4 The New England Colonies Slavery Few slaves (2% of New England’s population) With no large plantations, there was no need for slaves Worked as house servants, cooks, gardeners, and stable-hands Some were hired out to the warehouses and docks Some saved enough to buy their freedom, home to more free blacks than any other part of the Colonies, but not treated equally

5 The New England Colonies Geographic Impact on Living Atlantic Ocean provides economic opportunity, off the coast of New England, some of the world’s best whaling and fishing grounds The forests of New England provided all the materials for ship building Became part of international trade, not just with England Coastal towns like Boston, Salem, and Newport grew rich

6 The New England Colonies Government in the New England Colonies was controlled by the Puritan Church Religion in New England was dominated by the Puritans The “hard work” ethic of the New England way led to economic success But then the economic success of the colony attract new immigrants who were not Puritans and their power starts to decline Guarantee of religious freedom, the church lost control of elections

7 The New England Colonies Navigation Acts Insured that England made money from trade with the Colonies Everything had to be done with English ships and go through England Colonial goods not going to England were taxed The colonists resented this and smuggled goods in and out of the colonies to avoid paying the taxes
