4 What does it do? Allows you to find databases / e-journals by searching and browsing Provides access to all online resources / e-journals from off campus Some online resources can be searched simultaneously from within Oxlip+ MyResearch offers storage / personalisation

6 Using Oxlip+ to find and access Online Resources

7 Logging in Log in When you are off campus To use “My Research” Don’t forget to log off and to close you internet browser when you are using a public computer

8 Oxlip+ has four main options Find database (e.g. collections of articles, datasets etc) Find e-Journal: Find individual journals by journal title CrossSearch – allows you to search some databases simultaneously from within Oxlip+ My Research – your personal storage area on Oxlip+.

9 Find database Search by title or browse the A-Z of titles. Only really suitable if you know the name of the database you wish to use already! Browse databases by subject Search database by vendor/publisher or by searching for keywords (“any word”) in the database description

10 Find Database: Browsing subjects A-Z of subjects Pick a subject or type of resource Pick a sub-category Click “Go”

11 Find Database: Browsing subjects To see a little more information about all the resources choose “Detailed view” To connect to a database click on the title Click on “i” to see full information including coverage information, search tips, tutorials and guides etc

12 Find Database: More browsing Icons – if you see an icon use the “Legend” on the right to find out what it means Magnifier – shows that the resource can be searched from within Oxlip+ (and CrossSearched) Next page

22 Find e-Journal: choosing a database List of databases that hold the journal.Choose the database with the “best” date range e.g. Date range for Chadwcyk… No need to fill in the boxes. Click Go to connect Options for finding a print copy. Choose OLIS for Oxford libraries.

23 Find e-Journal: “Starts”, “Contains”, “Exact” When looking for a title that includes very common words choose “Exact”

25 Search tips Check “help”, “tips”, “examples” What are the keywords for your subject? –Are there any synonyms? –Are there any alternative spellings? –Which words are likely to be used in article titles / abstracts? –If you get too many results – can you refine your search? –If you get too few results – what are the broader terms?

26 Use Connectors / Boolean logic SpainCivil War Spain AND “Civil War” returns articles including both words ConflictWar War OR Conflict returns articles including one word or the other or both Civil WarSpain Civil War Not Spain returns articles including the phrase “Civil War” but only if the word Spain isn’t included “ ” searches for an exact phrase e.g. “United States” “Spanish Civil War” “War and Peace”

29 CrossSearch Pros Quick Easy Google like Cons Not all resources can be cross searched Fewer search options = less control over your search Oxlip+ only displays a proportion of the results its finds Allows you to search SOME databases from the Oxlip+ Up to 5 databases can be searched at once

30 CrossSearch 1. Choose between browsing Subjects or My Databases (your own favourites created in MyResearch) 3. Choose up to 5 databases. Only databases with a tick box can be cross searched 4. Enter your search terms 2.Choose a subject and sub category

31 Re-sort by Author / Title / Date See more information using Detailed View or Full View. You can email or save items from full view Refine your search by choosing Topics, Dates, Authors, Subjects Shopping basket saves the item to MyResearch “Findit@Oxford” checks for full text using OU eJournals. FT indicates that full text is definitely available. See more results Results

34 My Research Your personal area on Oxlip+ Need to log in to use most features MyArticles: store & export articles from CrossSearch MyDatabases: store your favourite databases and create sets to use in CrossSearch Re-run your saved cross-searches and set up e-mail alerts

35 My Articles Email selected articles or save them to your computer (flash drive/disk etc) Delete item Save to a folder in Oxlip+ Delete folder Advanced folder options: move items between folders, rename etc

36 History To run a saved “CrossSearch” click on the search Set up an email alert for a “saved CrossSearch”. Oxlip+ will regularly re-run the search and send you any new results by email.

37 My Databases Allows you to save and organise your favourite databases from Find Databases into Sets (like folders) Sets which include cross searchable databases can be searched using CrossSearch

38 1. My Databases: Use to choose your favourite Find Databases databases Click + to add a database to My Databases If you want to CrossSearch your chosen databases, only choose databases with the magnifying glass. This shows that that the database can be cross searched

39 2. My Databases: Organise your databases into Sets The databases that you have chosen appear on the Clipboard Click to save the databases to a set (folder) Give your set a name List of sets
