2 THE SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA Africa offered potential sources of resources and economic possibilities When Henry Stanley, a Br. Journalist went to Africa to find lost missionary- drew lots of interest from other powers

4 TENSIONS N THE BALKANS Leads to Russo Turkish War in 1877 Ottoman empire controlled Balkan territory- rebellion by Slaves- joined by Russia Russia moved towards Constantinople Britain, Austria-Hungary moved to support Turkey as feared Russian Expansion Russia won and Bulgaria created under Russian Rule Fear of upset of balance of power- Britain prepares for potential war vs. Russa Russia deprived of Russo-Turk war spoils Spirit of balance of power “concert of Europe” prevaled Russia lost territory- Britain/France/Austria- Hungary gained territory= Russia not happy Russia was too weak to fight a war Nobody was happy- Balkans a source of discontent- lot of powers had stake in the area Balance of Power idea causing problems

6 THE CONGRESS OF BERLIN 1878 Russia deprived of Russ-Turkish Spoils Spirit of the “Balance of Power” prevailed Russia lost territory while Britain, France, Austria- Hungary gained territory Russia not happy, but too weak to fight Nobody was happy in the end- Balkans were a source of discontent as a lot of countries had stake in there Ironic that “Balance of Power” was causing tensions

7 BRTAIN/FRANCE AND THE NILE RIVER Dispute over control of The Nile River in Egypt France was a rival of Germany and did not need hassle of fighting British May have upset European interests against Germany France also not happy over “Balance of Power”

8 THE BOER WAR 1899-1902 “Boers” were Dutch farmers in South Africa Clashed with British who won Left over Boers formed separate free state British discovered valuables (Diamonds and gold), and moved in- typical European arrogance

9 AND EUROPE IS HEADED TOWARDS…..
