Team 2 Kodak FunSaver Disposable Camera Redesign “A picture makes a moment last forever, why not develop a camera that helps ensure earth lasts forever?”

Mission Statement  Make the Kodak camera as “eco-friendly” as possible.  Design and advertise the camera in a way that makes its positive impact on the environment obvious.  Keep the price nearly the same if possibly cheaper  Design towards a target audience of professional and amateur photographers.

Abstract  People who practice photography as a hobby or even professionally ALWAYS like to have disposable cameras around. Not only are they cheap and convenient but in the right hands they can take beautiful photos. Also these photographers get a lot of their inspiration from nature. We plan to develop a disposable camera that is eco friendly as possible and reflects that in its appearance and is also manufactured with these professional photographers in mind.

Customer Needs  Not only does the camera need to be eco-friendly, the customer needs to be made aware of this fact.  A durable camera that is quick and easy to snap pictures with.  A design that helps inspire the photographer with their work (not bland or boring).

How are We Going to Do It?  New Package Material  Rechargeable Battery  Flash “on/off” button  Aesthetic Redesign  Marketing and Information Approach

Cardboard Packaging  We decided to change the packaging to cardboard because most plastics are difficult to recycle, and are made of petroleum.  The current design comes in a plastic bag as well as a cardboard sleeve.  Less materials means less expensive.

New Package Material  We propose only packaging in a cardboard box. It gets recycled with standard mixed office paper which for the consumer, is a commonly recycled material, unlike plastic.

Packaging  The colors and information that are currently in use would remain the same, but a “sticker” would be added to emphasize the fact that this camera is more sustainable than other ones with the following design.  (This would not really be a sticker, but it would be a print on the cardboard to make it more ecological and cheaper).

Research Done on Products: Rechargeable Battery  Rechargeable batteries cycle through 500-1000 charges.  Standard AA alkaline battery costs $0.39  A rechargeable NiMH AA battery costs $2.50 per unit (if bought in a store, but an arrangement with a manufacturer can drastically cut the price at least 50%).  Even if the battery only lasts half of its life expectancy the cost still comes out to $0.01 per camera cycle.  Even if you include the small costs of electricity used during charging and the salary of the worker charging the batteries it would still turn out to be considerably cheaper to implement the rechargeable battery.  And it is eco-friendly!!

Rechargeable Battery Analysis  In 20 years Kodak has recycled 1.5 billion cameras. If Kodak were to only save $0.05 to $0.10 per camera by using the recyclable battery, they could save 3.75 – 7.5 million dollars per year.  If they were to implement this idea they could lower the price of the camera and make their product more competitive, and capture a larger market share.

Rechargeable Battery Continued  Based off of the research we have done we decided to implement the rechargeable battery. Though the initial difficulty in logistics to implement this would be difficult to overcome, in the long run we would have a more affordable and sustainable product that brings more revenue.

Why Do People Choose Disposable Cameras?  They are not worried about them breaking.  They are easy to carry around (no need for protective casings etc.)  Picture quality is actually very good considering the price being paid.

Disposable Camera Picture Quality  The quality of the photograph depends much more heavily on the photographer than the camera.  Ansel Adams took his famous photo’s with cameras that were actually lower quality than disposable cameras in terms of optics but yet his photos sell for hundreds of dollars today.  Some photographers prefer carrying around only the disposable because all of the extra equipment only weighs them down. “The most important component to the camera is the 12 inches behind it” –Ansel Adams

What Do Consumers Do?  Consumers do prefer buying eco-friendly products over their less recyclable counterpart when given the choice.  When it comes down to it unfortunately, consumers almost always pick the LEAST EXPENSIVE of two options. Price turns out to be the deciding factor.  So what happens if a more eco-friendly product can be sold at the same price as its counterpart?

Everyone is Happy!

New Flash Switch  We are directing our product towards professional photographers and photographer hobbyists. We have discovered that many of these photographers only use flash at certain times. An easily accessible switch would allow them to switch flash on and off without even removing their eye from the camera finder.  In addition, there would be no need for a bulb to tell the user if the flash is on, you just check the switch, saving more energy.

Aesthetic Redesign Natural Colors! Reflects economical design! Creative & Artistic! Innovative and groundbreaking!

Adding Facts Directly to Camera.  The achievements Kodak has made in terms of their ability to recycle is very impressive, but we had to look up the facts on the internet to know exactly how impressive. We would put some of these facts on the back of the camera instead of the directions (which would be placed on the side instead) so that the average consumer has an idea of what Kodak does with their products. We believe this would make consumers feel better about using the product and ultimately buy the product more readily over competitors.

Conclusion For the nature enthusiast. For the environmentally concerned. For the professional Photographer. For the armature hobbyist. We Propose! The Kodak EcoCam Only $4.49!!!
