2 The Collarbone One of the main Shoulder bones Also known as your clavicle Located between your sterno-clavicular(SC) joint and acrmio-clavicualr(AC) joint. Helps hold up the scapula and the AC joint Provides stability and strength to the shoulder Protects nerves and blood vessels from the neck to the shoulder. Diagram of clavicle

3 What Causes Collarbone Breaks Falling on an outstretched arm Direct blow to the collarbone or shoulder Playing contact sports like football or ice hockey

4 Symptoms Immediate pain over clavicle Unable to raise affected arm Grinding feeling when moving affected joint Although shoulder doesn’t always appear out-of- position, a bump or swelling may show along clavicle at the AC joint Bone rarely breaks through skin, but may push skin out

5 Symptoms (continued) Usually isn’t a serious injury In rare cases a broken clavicle can injure a lung or rib, or pinch nerves and blood vessels If arm turns pale, tingles, or feels numb, seek immediate medical treatment. Your blood circulation could be blocked

6 How A Broken Clavicle Is Diagnosed Your doctor will examine your shoulder and look for lumps and bumps Your blood pressure and skin temperature will be checked Your doctor will check for damaged nerves or blood vessels Check the mobility of shoulder and other joints

7 How A Broken Clavicle Is Diagnosed (continued) Check muscle strength Take an x-ray to pin point the location of the break and how severe it is

8 Treatment Broken clavicles heal on their own Surgery is rarely needed For adults, your arm may be kept in a sling for up to a week Simple exercises may be done immediately Can start strength training when there is no pain Drugs may be given to relieve pain Picture of broken clavicle

9 Preventing Broken Bones Healthy bones are key in preventing breaks Bones need calcium to add strength and stiffness to bones Vitamin D is needed to move calcium into your bones Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Zinc, and protein are needed to re-build bones Its important to maintain healthy bones
