9 Bina Nusantara University 9 Overview of Infrastructure What is Infrastructure? Physical facilities that are sometimes called public works [ Greg 88 ] Public works are the physical structures and facilities that are developed or acquired by the public agency to house governmental functions and provide water, power, waste disposal, transportation and similar services to facilitate the achievement of common social and economic objectives [ American Public Work Association – APWA ]

10 Bina Nusantara University 10 Overview of Infrastructure What is Infrastructure? “The nation’s infrastructure is its system of public facilities, both publicly and privately funded, which provide for the delivery of essential services and a sustained standard of living. This interdependent, yet self-contained, set of structures provides for mobility, shelter, services, and utilities… America’s infrastructure is the base upon which society rests. Its condition affects our lifestyles and security and each is threatened by its unanswered decay.” [ Associated General Contractors of America- AGCA,1982 ]

11 Bina Nusantara University 11 Overview of Infrastructure What is Infrastructure? “A civilization’s rise and fall is linked to its ability to feed and shelter its people and to defend itself. These capabilities depend on infrastructure - the underlying, often hidden foundation of a society’s wealth and quality of life. A society that neglects its infrastructure loses the ability to transport people and food, provide clean air and water, control diseases, and conduct commerce.” [ The National Science Foundatino - NSF,1994 ]

12 Bina Nusantara University 12 Overview of Infrastructure What is Infrastructure? Infrastructure is the basic physical and organizational structures needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services and facilities necessary for an economy to function. The term typically refers to the technical structures that support a society, such as roads, water supply, sewers, power grids, telecommunications, and so forth. Viewed functionally, infrastructure facilitates the production of goods and services ; ……... [ Wikipedia ]
