3 The Revolution begins Spring of 1789  The 3rd estate writes the Tennis Court Oath  *Though it was a step in the right direction not much happens as a result

4 July 14th 1789-- Storming of the Bastille  A hungry Paris mob storms the Bastille (a prison) b/c it was a symbol of the King’s gov.  The army refuses to stop them  Considered the official beginning of the French Revolution!!

5 August 4th 1789 - “Declaration of the Rights of Man” is written  King was forced to sign and agree to uphold it  Contains Enlightenment ideas French Rev. Slogan : “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”

6 New Constitution 1789-1791  Created by the National Assembly (the updated Estates General)  Creates a limited monarchy in France with much more power for the people

7 Death to the King!  King Louis was put on trial in December 1792  He was charged with being a traitor to the people of France  He was found guilty and sentenced to DEATH!

9  Period after Louis execution from 1793- 1794  During this time thousands of “anti- revolutionary” people were put to death(40,000!!!)  Controlled by the Jacobins

10 The Guillotine  Used by the French to execute criminals  Was meant to be a more “humane” death but it may have been painful  Audiences to guillotining told numerous stories of blinking eyelids, speaking, moving eyes, movement of the mouth

13 Maximilien Robespierre  Leader of the Reign of Terror  He led the executions of suspected traitors from 1793-1794  Was eventually put to death as well for his crimes against humanity

14 Class work Activity  Read each of the actions taken during the early French Revolution  Determine which group benefited the most from the action and why  Answer the question that follows  Be prepared to share and discuss your answers
