* 30 years ago 1 in 20 people were overweight * Today 1 in 5 teens are overweight * 2/3 of adults are overweight

* Portions have grown * Access to food * Junk and fast food are easier to find * High processed foods * Eat out more than in years before * Eat more calories and are less active

* Strains the bones, muscles, and organs * Extra effort to walk and breath * Heat increases stress because the body traps heat * Contributes to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and certain diseases

* Depends on your height, gender, age, and body frame. * BMI= Body Mass Index- a measurement of body fat that uses a ration of weight to height. * Formula: * BMI= weight in pounds * 703/height in inches squared

A 15 yr. old male weighs 137 pounds and stands 5 feet 6 inches(66 inches). * 137*703= 96,311 * 66*66= 4,356 * 96,311/4,356=22 * For adults overweight is BMI between 25 and 29.9 * For teens refer to the chart on page 152 of the textbook

* BMI is not a foolproof measure of health or fitness * Athletes or people with large muscles may have a higher BMI but not be overweight * Body Fat measure is a truer measure because it is a comparison of the amount of fat and muscle in a person’s body

* I will now had each group an image with each is diverse and will spark discussion about different views of body image. * Take a few minutes to discuss and record the comments from your group about each image. * As a class we will discuss what shapes body image and thoughts about what has increased the number of people who are now considered obese.
