5 Governance Concerns “Hockey Australia strongly supports the principle of amalgamation and believe that it is in the best interests of the sport to be governed and administered holistically rather than separate men’s and women’s associations. We are aware that a number of competitions within New South Wales are not yet amalgamated. The continued existence of major men’s and women’s competitions is at odds with modern sports governance processes and the direction of our sport’s major funder, the ASC. As such, the Hockey Australia Board is writing to the Hockey NSW Board to strongly encourage you to finalise the process of amalgamation within your State.” – Letter from Hockey Australia to the Board of Hockey NSW, 2011 Australian Sports Commission raises concerns and puts all states ‘on notice’ at 2013 Hockey Australia AGM

6 Australian Sports Commissi on 18 March, 2013 Media Release The sports of swimming, cycling, athletics, sailing, rowing, hockey and basketball are the first sports to be subject to possible financial sanctions of up to 20 per cent of their funding if they do not implement the mandatory governance principles over the next 12 months. The Australian Sports Commission will work closely with each of these sports to help them achieve these principles.
