3 StFX and COADY  St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) is a liberal arts university, founded in 1853, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada  StFX annually admits over 4,000 students in: arts, science, nursing, education, adult education, and business and information systems  Coady is the international extension arm of StFX, and its commitment to social justice

4 THE ANTIGONISH MOVEMENT  A people’s movement for economic and social justice which began in Nova Scotia during the 1920s  Prominent founder of the movement, Dr. Rev. Moses M. Coady, believed everyone could be a “Master of Their Own Destiny”  Based on empowering the disadvantaged through adult education and group action “If we are wise, we will help the people everywhere to get the full and abundant life…to become masters of their own destiny.”

5 THE COADY INSTITUTE TODAY  Recognized as a world leader in education and action research for community-driven development  Builds on a long tradition of promoting community-driven development and social justice leadership  Advocates an asset-based approach to community development, which builds on the individual strengths and assets of each community  Offers innovative Diploma, Certificate and Graduate programs aimed at building leadership and strengthening organizational capacity

6 COADY’S NETWORK  More than 5,000 graduates and numerous global partners in over 130 countries are reaching out to millions of men, women and children in the world’s poorest nations and communities  Coady partnerships are working with local institutions to identify, build and share knowledge on effective development practice  Currently working in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Botswana, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Brazil

8 WHO SHOULD ATTEND  Programs are designed for mid-to-senior level development practitioners, with at least 5 years of experience  Candidates are generally leaders of:  National and international NGOs  Community-based organizations  Women’s groups  Co-operatives  Faith-based organizations  Indigenous people’s organizations  Voluntary organizations  Government departments  Private sector organizations

9 DIPLOMA IN DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP : Citizen Engagement in a Changing Global Context July 3—December 8, 2007; June 30—December 5, 2008  Program Goal: To strengthen organizations involved in community-driven development by providing high quality, leadership development opportunities for mid and senior level staff  Program Purpose: To strengthen the capacity of development leaders to effectively motivate and support people in the development of their communities and societies Diploma in Development Leadership provides a framework for just and sustainable development, based on a participatory, practical, holistic approach.

10 MASTER OF ADULT EDUCATION: Community Development Stream  Collaborative offering between St. Francis Xavier University and the Coady  Provides community development practitioners an opportunity of deepening understanding of ways adult education methods and principles can empower communities and organizations Self-directed, distance education program Begins with mandatory three-week Foundations Institute in Antigonish, Nova Scotia Credit for this three-week institute can be incorporated into the Diploma Program for those who wish to pursue both programs Students have five years to complete the program For more information please St.FX’s Department of Adult Education at: www.sstfx.ca/academic/adulted

25 RATIONALE AND METHODOLOGY PROGRAM RATIONALE: Rapidly changing global environment profoundly impacts the way people and communities organize and mobilize Development leaders and organizations must be prepared to respond creatively to this dynamic context PROGRAM METHODOLOGY Uses interactive, experiential learning methods which bridge theory and practice Creates stimulating environment for learning Collaborative learning environment is fostered among facilitators and participants, recognizing rich and diverse experiences in the group Participants encouraged to reflect on their own experience throughout the program and take responsibility for own learning

26 PROGRAM OBJECTIVES By the end of the Diploma Program, participants will:  Strengthen their capacity to lead and support communities and groups in community- driven development initiatives;  Strengthen their capacity to support and catalyze organizational learning and change in a sustainable and participatory manner;  Reflect on the underlying values and philosophies of development and transformative leadership to strengthen their commitment to social justice;  Explore conceptual linkages between participation, good governance, development and social change;  Develop their capacity to act collectively through knowledge sharing, networking and multi-stakeholder processes to achieve greater impact at national and global levels;  Develop practical competencies in self-directed research and learning, as well as inquiry-based processes for social learning at the organizational and community level.

27 PROGRAM STRUCTURE  Program consists of a combination of mandatory foundation courses, skill-building electives, co-operative inquiry seminars, and subject-specific specialization courses  Program is split into 5 Terms  Term I: Foundation courses  Term II: Electives and seminars  Term III: Specializations  Term IV: Electives and seminars  Term V: Specializations

28 PROGRAM ELECTIVES  Participants choose a combination of 3-5 skills-based electives Electives offered during the 2006 year* were: Appreciative Inquiry Capacity Building for Community-Driven Planning Community Economic Analysis Conflict Analysis and Interventions Development Communications Financial Analysis and Budgeting Gender Analysis for Policy and Planning Linking Producers to Markets Negotiation in a Multi-stakeholder Context Participatory Training and Collaborative Facilitation People Assessing their Health (PATH) Tool Research Processes and Methods Subsector and Value Chain Analysis * Course offerings are subject to change year to year.

29 SPECIALIZATIONS  Specializations are offered during September and November  Course-based specializations include: Advocacy and Citizen Engagement Community-Based Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding Community-Based Microfinance Community Involvement Study Livelihoods and Markets Master of Adult Education Orientation Mobilizing Assets for Community-Driven Development Organizational Learning and Change  Independent Reading and Research options also exist for those who wish to pursue individual research on a specific topic

30 CO-OPERATIVE INQUIRY SEMINARS  One-week issue-based research seminars, based on a methodology called co-operative inquiry  Participants name topics of personal interest and discuss, research and reflect on individual practice and new knowledge within a small group environment Participants must successfully complete 3 issues- based seminars

31 PROGRAM FEES Applicants from the global South are eligible for bursaries that cover most of the cost of tuition, room and board. Special efforts are made to enable women and aboriginal peoples to attend. Candidates are fully responsible for covering their own travel costs.
