1 Human Anatomy and Body Systems

2 Levels of Organization
Remember, the human body is organized in several levels, from the simplest to the most complex. . . Cells – the basic unit of life Tissues – clusters of cells performing a similar function Organs – made of tissues that perform one specific function Organ Systems – groups of organs that perform a specific purpose in the human body

3 The purpose of the 10 organ systems is for the human body to maintain homeostasis
Homeostasis: regulation of an organism’s internal life maintaining conditions despite changes in its environment.

4 The 10 Human Body Systems The 10 human body systems are as follows:
-- nervous system -- integumentary system -- respiratory system -- digestive system -- excretory system -- skeletal system -- muscular system -- circulatory system -- endocrine system -- reproductive system

5 The Integumentary System
Purpose: It protects the body from external factors such as bacteria, chemicals, sun rays and temperature.

6

7 2.Protect Internal Organs 3.Major Muscles for Movement
The Skeletal System Purpose/Function: 1 Shape and Support 2.Protect Internal Organs 3.Major Muscles for Movement 4.Blood Cells Formed in Marrow 5.Calcium and Phosphorus Storage

8

9 The Muscular System Purpose: works with the skeletal and nervous system to produce movement, also helps to circulate blood through the human body

10

11 The Digestive System Purpose: to convert food particles into simpler molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and used by the body

12

13 The Respiratory System
Purpose: to provide the body with a fresh supply of oxygen for cellular respiration and remove the waste product carbon dioxide

14

15 The Circulatory System
Purpose: to deliver oxygenated blood to the various cells and organ systems in your body so they can undergo cellular respiration

16

17 Purpose: to rid the body of wastes, including excess water and salts
The Excretory System Purpose: to rid the body of wastes, including excess water and salts

18

19 The Nervous System Purpose: to coordinate the body’s response to changes in its internal and external environment

20

21 The Endocrine System Purpose: to control growth, development, metabolism and reproduction through the production and secretion of hormones

22

23 The Immune System Purpose: to remove infectious diseases and other pathogens from the human body

24

25 The Reproductive System
Purpose: To produce offspring.
