1 Environmental Management Systems
The EMAS “easy” approach Solomon Ioannou

2 Why do businesses need to perform environmentally?
Because business depend on ecosystem services, notably for resource utilization in order to be competitive; Yet many ecosystems are being impoverished by unsustainable activities and resources are therefore being consumed at a rate far exceeding their natural levels of replenishment; The natural capital is being exhausted and for this business recognise that long-term sustainable development requires good environmental performance.

4 How can Business Perform Environmentally?
Setting up an Environmental Management System

5 Eco-Management Audit Scheme
EMAS is the most advanced environmental management scheme presently available. Unlike other schemes EMAS integrates corporate environmental accountability Regulation (EC) No 761/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council -19/3/2001

6 What is EMAS? EMAS stands for Eco-Management Audit Scheme and is a European Union regulation with a reference number EC761/2001. EMAS is designed for businesses that commit themselves to evaluate, manage and improve their environmental performance.

7 What is EMAS? EMAS is open to all types of businesses and organisations in the public and private sector. All of ISO requirements are laid down in appendix one of the EMAS regulation.

8 What is EMAS “easy”? EMAS “easy” for small business has been developed by Heinz Werner Engel in collaboration with the European Union and is a way to implement EMAS which is proportional to the size, financial capacity and organizational structure of small business.

9 Setting the EMS Initial environmental review; Environmental aspects;
Legal compliance; Environmental objectives and responsibilities;

10 Setting the EMS Environmental Indicators; Environmental policy;
Environmental audits; Management reviews; Environmental statements; Verification audit.

11 Step 1: Environmental Review
The Initial Environmental Review is a preliminary assessment that records down all the environmental weaknesses of the business. Ecomapping. On a map of the premises the organisation records water leakages, excessive energy use, spillages of dangerous substances, waste disposal, noise pollution, aesthetic, air polluting sources etc.

12 Step 1: Ecomapping

13 Paperless Management System Saving Resources

15 Step 6: Environmental Policy
We, at Greentas Company recognize that arid areas like Jordan require a particular care taking into account their special characteristics, their fragility and their natural and cultural resources. We therefore, subscribe to the following sustainability principles: Use of energy resources shall not adversely impact climate change; Use of water resources shall not adversely impact desertification; Generation of waste shall not deplete resources and habitats; Activities shall not contribute to the loss of biodiversity; Activities shall not adversely impact cultural and natural heritage sites; Use of chemicals shall not adversely impact the ecosystem; Adhering to the above sustainability principles we are committed in setting up objectives with targets that are reviewed in an attempt to continually improve our good environmental and social performance. We are committed taking the necessary steps to prevent environmental degradation while ensuring that all of our activities are in compliance with the relevant legal requirements. Signed by Director Mr. Greetas

16 Step 7: Self Check Inspect internally the progress made on the environmental action programme; Record down those incidences where progress was not made; Identify the reasons behind such delay.; Summarize all findings on one sheet of paper and circulate this to all the management team.

17 Step 7: Example 4.5.5 Internal Audit 4.5.1 Control and Measurement
4.4.6 Practices Control End of quarter End of each quarter End of each year 4.3.3 Environmental management programme Electric Energy Consumption 4.4.3 Internal and external communication Water Consumption 4.4.5 Control EMS documentation Fuel Consumption 4.4.7 Preparation of emergency situations LPG Gas Consumption 4.5.1 Control and measurements Waste production 4.5.3 Corrective actions 4.5.4 records (Eco Logbook) Internal Audit (Quick check) Objectives and targets 4.6 Management review Once a year 4.5.2 Continuous Evaluation of Legal Compliance 4.3.1 Initial environmental Review 4.3.2 Legal and other requirements Hotel Operation Permit (once) 4.4.1 Structure and responsibilities Contract with recycling company 4.4.2 Identification of training needs Contract with Municipality Waste collection 4.4.4 Documentation Ground Water Well License 4.4.6 Develop codes of conduct 4.5.2 Legal compliance (quick check)

18 Example of Non Conformity
Non-Conformities, Corrective and Preventive Actions Problem: Decisions taken with regards to improving environmental performance such as renovation of washroom, new LPG boilers, and new ozone disinfecting swimming pools are not incorporated into the Environmental Programme. Source of the problem: Understanding of how the EMS works Proposed solution: All investments shall be incorporated into the Environmental Programme to show the Hotel’s decision towards improvement of its environmental performance. Date: 10/11/2007 NCR: 1 Date of Implementation: 20/11/2007 Signature: Environmental Manager

19 Step 8: Progress Management Review
Is an overview of the progress of the organisation’s environmental performance. It describes the progress made on saving resources by analyzing the measurements in comparisons with the indicators. It states the delays spotted during the environmental audits. The Management Review provides the opportunity to reconsider some of the actions taken and if need be, add new ones. In other words the Environmental Management System is a living one and should reflect the changing environmental needs of the organisation.

20 Step 9: Environmental Declaration
This is a statement that indicates the organisation’s commitment on the actions taken towards improving the environmental performance. The Declaration is signed by the management of the organisation and by the EMAS verifier and is send for registration.

21 Step 10: Verification The day of Verification is judgment day!
Anyone in the organisation may be be asked questions by the verifier; The organisation needs to show the evidence occurred during the implementation of the environmental action programme. Such evidence could be faxes, invoices, letters, tables and charts of measurements, electronic data, interviews with people etc. Congratulations! The organisation is registered with EMAS and is now welcomed in the group of those business with advance environmental management schemes presently available
