Sasha Houston Brown’s letter to Urban Outfitters expresses how she feels really disrespected as Native American woman; since she feels disrespected, it is only natural to make the assumption that others feel disrespected. Brown takes “personal offense to the blatant racism and perverted cultural appropriation” (Brown) of the Urban Outfitters, the store in Minneapolis, clothing line; because she is a member of the Santee Sioux Nation, then she has the right to assume that there are others whom are also offended by the “ignorance and bigotry” (Brown). This is saying that it is extremely rare that one person stands alone on an issue; there are always others that feel the same, but often are too afraid to speak out. By Brown is standing up for her culture and is giving voice to an issue that is often times overlooked. What I mean is that she has the courage to speak out against “cultural theft” (Brown); this public protest will shed light on the issue and allow other disrespected individuals to step forward. Brown absolutely, positively has the right to assume that other tribes feel extremely disrespected, and if they don’t, then they can protest her protest; freedom of speech is given to all.
