4 A spatial preposition is a word which is used to describe the position of an object often in relation to another object.

5 Embedded Questions Can you tell me where the library is? I don't know where the theater is. Can you tell me how to get to Building 5? Some other important expressions include:  I'm lost.  Which way is the hotel?  You can't miss it.  Right in front of you.  It's on the second floor.

6 Asking for Directions – Common Phrases Excuse me……. (Be polite, since you are interrupting) How do I find... suite 305? Would/Could you tell me how to get to... the restroom? What is the best way to get to... the business office? Would/Could you direct me to... Mrs. Yang’s office? Which way do I go to get to... the Architecture Building?

7 Go Turn Take Stay On Left/Right Up/Down Through Giving Directions – Common Vocabulary 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd … It’s + preposition  It’s on  It’s at  It’s near  It’s across from Transition Words  after that  then  next  when you get to…go…  finally

8 When Giving Directions in English Giving directions usually consists of two sets of instructions. In the first set: Say “Go” and tell the listener what street, building, office number, etc – or – how far they need to go. In the second set: Say “then” and tell the listener what to do when they get there. (turn left, turn right, it’s on the left, etc.) Giving even very complicated directions is just a repetition of these two steps.

10 SPU Map Exercise 1. I am the person in the car: Go to the entrance and turn left onto the campus. Take the next right turn and go straight. Then turn left at the end of the street. The building is on your right. 2. I am the person running: Go straight on the road, after you pass between Buildings 5 and 9, it is straight ahead of you. 3. I am the person walking the dog: First, turn around, then take your first right and then a left. You will pass Building 2 on your left. Turn right on the road in front of Building 1 and then take the next left. Go inside the next building and up to floor 12A, room 3.
