Then copy down the following prompt and answer it with 30 words or more. DO NOT COPY WHAT IS IN RED! “This blanket has been handed down for many generations in my family. It once belonged to one of our chiefs and is a link to our ancestors.” The above passage is taken from the book. It describes why the at.’oow is so valuable to Garvey. If you do not remember what an at.’oow is please go back and read page 19. Prompt: Draw a mini picture of an at.`oow. (must be colorful) Think of something your family has that holds the same type of value as the at.’oow. Describe the item and why it is so important.

9 Notes 11/3/14 Idiom – word, phrase or expression that is not meant to be taken literally or actually true, or exactly what the person is saying word for word. In other words, when used in everyday language, they have a meaning other than the basic one you would find in the dictionary.

11 Notes 11/4/14 Flashback in a narrative refers to a scene that does not follow the time order of the plot. The flashback describes an event or events that took place in the past. Personification is a figure of speech in which an author grants human characteristics to non-human objects. For example: With every stroke forward, an invisible hand had pushed him two strokes backward into the bay, returning him to shore. – ch. 5; page 41; last paragraph

Write about a time in your life when you placed blame on someone else unnecessarily or discuss a time blame was placed on you and you felt it was unfair and unjust.

14 Notes 11/6/14 Symbol-A symbol in literature is a person, object, or event that represents an idea or a set of ideas. Simile- A comparison between two unlike things using the words like, as, than, or resembles… Examples: -Her heart is like stone. or -She has a heart as hard as stone. -Her eyes resemble two glittering pieces of ice. -His face is as round as a pumpkin. How can you remember this?? “When you like something you smile!” Metaphor- A comparison between two unlike things saying one thing is another. (Does not use the word like, as, than or resembles!) Example- She has a heart of stone.
