Future School Design By: Sebastian Cline of the P21 group

Contents The “5E” The design of future schools Inside the classroom of the future and the PLD The future learning methods

The “5E” The “5E” is the bases for my entire school design and learning program. The “5E” stands for: Education, Equality, Environment, Economy and Efficiency. These are important things that have often (especially now, in this day and age) played a part in our lives. So it makes perfect sense that they be the bases of education for children too. -Education stands for knowledge and understanding being taught through technology and interaction with the world. Students communicate with others around the world and have access to the internet to expand their knowledge. - Equality stands for equal rights and standards. The school is disability friendly and students are taught to respect/appreciate others and their opinions. -Environment stands for respect and understanding for the planet that hosts us and the other life living on it. The school uses green energy wherever possible and students participate in field trips to learn about local wildlife. - Economy stands for reasonably priced items while not sacrificing quality. Students learn how to make basic repairs of certain items used in school and at home to save money and help the environment by decreasing waste going into landfills. -Efficiency stands for students learning how to maximize their time and energy. Efficiency in teams and on their own will be an important skill.

The design of future schools The my design for school of the future is very different in ways and very similar in others. The design is made up of interlocking blocks that are either a class, a group/traffic area or specialized. In the center of the school there would be an open area with a small wind farm and gazebo surrounded by trees. Around the center there would be a race track for gym. Between each class there is a group/traffic area for dispersal of students and those connect to a hall on the inside of the classes and outside of the track. At the front of the school there is an office and staff/special room. The basement would have the gym, electronics room and cafeteria. On the roof there is a rooftop garden to teach students about nature and provide insulation. The school is wheel chair friendly. The energy would be provided mainly trough the wind farm in the center and heat is controlled by geothermal. This makes the school eco- friendly.

Inside the classroom of the future The class of the my design will be shaped like an amphitheater with a flat back. The students desks are mounted on wheels for easy moving for group work and solar panels on the desks hook up to the schools battery pack for more energy. On the desk there is a touch screen monitor and docking port for the PLD. When plugged in to the PLD the monitor enlarges the PLD’s screen as well as having the ability to use and interact with the screen at the front when connected to the teachers laptop, the main “hub” of the class. At the front of the class there is a screen made of flat white paint with a webcam on top for interclass disscusions which an electronic projector projects the teachers screen on to. The teacher and the students can use infrared lights to interact with the screen. The PLD is essentially an IPod touch 8g which has been modified for education purposes. It would allow students to communicate, take notes with ease, learn school at home and to carry a library in there pocket. The PLD also would have a neat program in it but that’s on the next slide!

The future learning methods In my school of the future there is a brand new method for teaching. All the required elements of the grade are all put into province made games or easy to learn format on the PLD. These “games” are constantly evaluated thus eliminating tests also every student has different variations so cheating is impossible. By the end of the school year the student must complete the necessary requirements but aside from knowing a pass or fail the student will not know until the end of the year there actual note. Weakening discrimination by intelligence level. If the student finishes ahead of time they may either have free time or continue with the next grade. Through the year students go at there own pace. During certain days special activities will be either: group projects, special lessons i.e.: science experiment or community activities/volunteering. These together with good support at home should lead to a revolution in education that opens are children’s eyes to are amazing planet and prepares them for the world that awaits.

Proof of cost efficiency: All prices are generalized prices from the internet not the cheapest or most expensive Parent paid expenses 1 year= -school supplies 88$ 3 years= -school supplies and backpack 286$ 1 PLD= -at max 260$, lasts 4 years 12 years= -school supplies 1144$ -PLD 780$ Parents save 364$! School paid expenses For RMS 1 hall= -145 math texts 9425$ -35 science texts 2275$ -35 English texts 2275$ -75 social studies texts 4875$ Total=18850$ in text books for one hall, lasts 10 years. Total=113100$ in text books for 6 halls, lasts 10 years. Each class has 1 computer at 400$ 5x400$=2000$ That’s 12000$ for the school not including the computer lab and resource rooms. For the computer lab there are around 25 computers only 22 seem to work. That’s 10000$ in computers in the lab. 24 computers for the resource rooms or 9600$ So for this school around 31600$ in computers 15 need fixing and in a few years they will all need replacing. These computers last about 5 years before replacements are bought. If you add computer and text costs for 10 years worth of grades 6, 7, 8 you get around 176300$. Future school costs (Updated RMS) Electronic projectors RMS have 20 we would need 32. A projector costs around 850$. -10200$ for the required projectors -128400$for touch screens -12900$ for 860 infrared lights -1495$ for 856 solar panels. Adding 10000$ for repairs around 162995$ for 10 years worth of grades 6, 7, 8. RMS saves around 13305$ for 10 years worth of grades 6, 7, 8 plus some of the energy needs will be provided for more savings.
