CHALLENGES FACING EUSD Need to develop new models and designs for 21 st Century teaching and learning Aging Facilities and Infrastructure Outdated Technology Budget Issues ($6 M budget cut)
Solution – Proposition P Facility bond extension Funds must be spent locally and cannot be taken away by the State Can be used for capital facility and technology projects only Can’t be used to pay for teacher or administrative salaries Money saved through energy efficiency can be used to directly support classrooms
IMPACT AREAS FUNDED BY PROPOSITION P 21 st Century Classrooms 21 st Century Classrooms Improving student access to computers and modern technologyImproving student access to computers and modern technology Green Initiative Projects Green Initiative Projects Energy/water efficiency for the environment and to keep more money in the classroomEnergy/water efficiency for the environment and to keep more money in the classroom Facility Upgrades and Renovations Facility Upgrades and Renovations Outdated classrooms and infrastructure need to be brought up to today’s educational, safety, and technological standardsOutdated classrooms and infrastructure need to be brought up to today’s educational, safety, and technological standards

Encinitas Union School District Green Initiative
ENERGY EFFICIENCY GOALS Reduce energy and water use at all campuses Upgrade plumbing, windows, heating, and air conditioning for greater efficiency Save general fund dollars that can be used to support classrooms
GREEN INITIATIVE PROJECTS Solar panels at 7 schools Solar tubes and natural lighting Reclaimed water for irrigation Waterless urinals Upgrade heating and air conditioning System wide usage monitoring
ENERGY SAVINGS District currently spends approximately $1 million on electricity and $200,000 on water use every year. Solar panels and more efficient heating and air conditioning will cut total energy costs by at least 60%. Reclaimed water should cut water use by 50% Total annual savings to District = $700,000 Can be used to keep class sizes small!
